Italian term

sopravvenienze attive straordinarie

Italian to English Bus/Financial Accounting Notes to the Accounts - British English
P&L, details on item "Proventi ed oneri straordinari"

I proventi straordinari comprendono sopravvenienze attive per minori imposte per XXX euro e ***sopravvenienze attive straordinarie*** per XXX euro.

Since I translated "sopravvenienze attive" as "exceptional income" in another part of the text, how can I render "straordinarie"? "Extraordinary exceptional income" sounds weird to me.

extraordinary prior year income

IMHO you translated it wrongly in the other part. These sopravvenienze attive is income that you have suddenly discovered that you earned the year before. It is a bit unusual to add the adjective "straordinarie" to them, but I can't see any alternative but to add "extraordinary" to it. Possibly because they relatively big.

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopravvenienze_attive

Looked at your link. Yes "straordinario" is big and not recurring, but may be caratterisco (core business) however. There is a huge amount of hair-splitting in there which only really becomes important when it is tax related. The important thing about using "prior year income" is that it is clear that it is recognised this year i.e. in this year's income statement (or explanatory table for it). That way you can see it is an exception, because everything else was this year. It isn't usually a problem though.
Note from asker:
I had found out that sopravvenienze attive and passive can either be ordinarie or straordinarie and this seems to be a standard concept. For this explantion, search for "Sono ordinarie le sopravvenienze relative a valori stimati, che non derivino da errori, ossia" and you'll find an useful PDF. In any case I think I should use extraordinary as you suggested while changing "exceptional" with something else.
