A qualificação dos cenários urbanos ....

Portuguese to English Tech/Engineering Architecture urbanismo
Anyone got a good translation for "qualificação"?
A qualificação dos cenários urbanos depende em grande parte da diversidade de materiais,

Sheryle Oliver Apr 25, 2012:
Maybe we need more context. Who, for example, does the qualifying? Are we dealing with a tech field or a language question (problem)???
Sheryle Oliver Mar 3, 2012:
This is definitely not an Urban Development Department checklist. Instead, it is an architect's or city planner's treatise on how to better the interaction between city dwellers and their urban environments. The emphasis if therefore on quality, not on classification. What was throwing us off was the rather pecular use of the word /qualificação/.

HELP! "qualificação" Edward and Sheryle and David
A qualificação dos cenários urbanos depende em grande parte da diversidade de materiais, cores e texturas dos elementos naturais e artificiais, e da coexistência equilibrada do permanente e do transitório. As XXXX (1978:38) stated “people require varying, cycling stimuli to remain sensitive and alert to their environments.” , underlying that neither overstimulation, or monotony, are desired,
Sheryle Oliver Mar 2, 2012:
Ói, Nick, could you post the rest of the sentence and perhaps an observation as to whether the text refers to urban evaluation or urban improvement?
Nick Taylor (asker) Mar 2, 2012:
Two completely different suggestions Still dont know which way to go!

enhancing the quality of urban landscapes/settings

Without the rest of the sentence, it is hard to be sure, but according to Aurélio, one of the meanings of /qualificar/ is /atribuir qualidade a/. Therefore, one interpretation is that /enhancing/improving/upgrading the quality of urban settings/landscapes in great part depends on employing a wide range of materials...

Setting or landscape is better than scenario because the emphasis is on the physical environment, and in much of the literature, the term scenario involves much more - people, services, social services, culture - the whole urban scene.

Classification of urban types.

Declined
The word "qualificação," architecturally speaking, means the classifying of buildings on how they interact in the urban context in terms of function, culture and symbolism. In this instance the diversity of materials play a important role in this classification (definition).
