Whether use \"Secretaria\" or \"Ministerio\" in Mexico is not the issue. We are trying to find the English equivalents to those government offices and positions, and \"Ministries\" is an acceptable equivalent. Moreover, Victor, if what you say is true, then none of Latin America (there are no monarchies) has a \"Ministry\" or \"Minister,\" which when interpreting into English, of course, is not the case.

As for the whole secretary/minister debate: France, for example, is a republic and it has ministers, not secretaries. So I don't agree with the monarchy/minister versus republic/secretary reasoning."

: The USA does have a Department of the Interior, but its powers & duties are other than those of the Secretaría de Gobernación/ Ministerio del Interior

: Mexico's INS is the Instituto Nacional de Migracion, it is a descentralized unit of Gobernacion, but it is not the major function of this secretariat, just like INS depended from the Justice Dept. befor it became the Bureau of Imm. of Homeland Department

Secretary of the Interior
In the USA, "Secretary" would be a usual translation, and it refers to the person, not the office which is "Secretaría".
Referring to Marita's reply, "Gobernación" has still many more functions other than what West says.
Manuel's comment is also very true; the U.S. Secretary of the Interior is in charge of what they call "Patrimonio Nacional" in Mexico, quite different.
Nevertheless, the generally accepted term in English for this (USA)is "Secretary of the Interior".
"Secy. of State" in Mexico is "Secretario de Relaciones Exteriores" or "Secy. of Foreign Relations" in English, and the US Secy. of State they call "Secretario de Estado" in Mexico.

Again, \"Secretary of the Interior\" appears to be the generally preferred, official or standard translation, which is of course does not exist for everything.
I have always had some issue with that for the USA because of the totally different function assumed by the cabinet department with the same name in the USA, but I use it, and I have not been able to come up with anything else.
Moreover, it is frequently used in the USA for similar departments from other countries besides Mexico.

Ministry is incorrect to be used for a Federal Republic which Mexico is, Ministry is more for a Monarchy, even a Democratic Monarchy such as Canada or Australia.
