Dear Gilla, VHNY first. It's a good theory, leakage via the cork. Does such a thing as rebroussage of corks exist?

I think that this means that part of the lower end of the cork (le miroir) has been rubbed or subjected to some kind of friction. It is hard to tell without more context whether this is the findings of an examination of the cork, or something that was done subsequently. Can you give us more information?
