auf einer Stahlbetonplatte oder an einer Stahlbetonplatte

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Safety testing of materials and building methods
The text is the result of a technical assessment of a new method of fastening glass walls and balustrades, which uses formed steel profiles.

The sentence goes as follows: "Für absturzsichernden Verglasungen müssen die Klemmprofilen diskret ... auf einer Stahlbetonplatte oder an einer Stahlbetonplatte befestigt sein ..."

The reason is for this that stress tests were only done on such arrangements (where the profiles were fastened to reinforced concrete using brackets, and not where the profiles (Klemmprofile) were embedded directly in concrete.

My guess is that "auf einer Stahlbetonplatte" refers to fastening the profiles on the (reinforced concrete floor), whereas "an einer Stahlbetonplatte" refers to fastening against vertical wal (also made out of reinforced concrete).

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

"auf" would mean on top of the concrete slab, "an" perhaps refers to the edge of the slab?

@Willem I'm sympathetic to you on safety needs, but I really can't think of a way of expressing this "on top of or to" concept. I think "on a or onto a" gets close, but it sounds inelegant imo. Since the context already talks about the different places the glass can be secured, I'm going to follow Phil's suggestion and leave it out of this sentence.

@ gangels Thanks for the tip, but the text tells me the "profiles" were cold formed, rather than machined: ie. the were bent into shape.

I do agree with both of you to some extend. But bearing in mind that constructions like these have a large impact on safety, and have prove to be lethal when not properly designed or fitted, I think that my preference goe to the German thoroughness after anyway!... ;-)

Agree with Phil. The German curse of trying to overexplain things, greatly muddying the waters. BTW, the much-beloved 'profiles' are 'machined components'

It does seem a slightly odd way of phrasing it - couldn't they just say 'auf oder an einer Stahlbetonplatte'?

I agree with your interpretation. I don't think you need to make the same distinction in your translation - you can just say "fastening to" for both.

It seems to me that the writer wants to make a distinction between fitment on top of a reinforced concrete floor, which is obviously the most secure method if one wants to minimise the danger of the glazing to come down, and fitting it on other locations, like the side. As long as it is on or to a reinforced concrete, the profiles offer the required security level.
