"Unreal city" Sure, if this was for a different kind of audience, perhaps. But the writer's a real elitist, and the text seems to really be only aimed at experts. I don't think it would be at all appropriate to change the reference, given the context. Thanks.

I'd be tempted to put "Waste Land" for "Ciudad Irreal" - "Unreal city" is a line from The Waste Land, but I don't think most people would recognise it, whereas they would have heard of the poem itself.

I think it is worth while to preserve the cadence and suggested image of the original. We may not like it and it does sound old-fashioned and "over poetic" in Spanish, but the voice behind the original has to be reflected in the translation too.
