reduce looseness (play, gap)

When vehicle parts are assembled, parts must fit perfectly (referred to as fit & finish = 合わせ建て付け and can't allow any ガタ. I gues this expression came to be because when two parts don't fit well, it produces some rattling noise.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: ""Play" is necessary, loosening is not. From the third reference given by cinefil it seems ガタ is the result of loosening, in other words, "play" may be there intentionally, initially, but if it increases too much, it becomes "ガタ", and that is not desirable. So, ガタ is the result of the loosening process, and I think this is what this specific joint pin prevents, or minimizes."

play or looseness

ガタガタ is related, as the rattling is caused by looseness or play.
