Spanish term

Benemérito de las Américas

Non-PRO Spanish to English Social Sciences History
Benito Juárez, a Mexican statesman, was recognized by Latin American leaders for his opposition to foreign intervention. He's called "Benemérito de las Américas" for this reason. In my translation, I am considering omitting his title, for the simple fact that this title is not used in English, but I might include it if someone comes up with a good translation.

Here's the text:
Por medio del presente informo a ustedes que el día lunes 21 de marzo tendremos suspensión de labores con motivo del aniversario del natalicio de Benito Pablo Juárez García, Benemérito de las Américas, de acuerdo al calendario escolar 2010-2011.

Outstanding Patriot of the Americas

...
Note from asker:
I think that's the point, the title was conferred with a Pan-American vision in mind. Simón Bolívar is considered a continental hero. I even saw a statue in Quebec, Canada, that recognized him as a Pan-American hero. It may sound counterintuitive, but I'd say that's the point, he was a patriot of the Americas.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : Good references, and the title seems to have some official status, though I don't think "patriot" is a good translation of "benemérito" (and can you be a patriot of a continent?). // I take your point, James. If that's what it's called, fair enough!

I based my answer wholly on the references I found, Charles. If it's good enough for Unesco, it's good enough for me!
agree David Ronder : Good bit of research

Thanks, Mirtha.
agree Muriel Vasconcellos : Or you could even leave out 'outstanding' - which seems to diminish rather than add to his luster.

You know, I was originally going to omit 'outstanding', Muriel (and do in the search reference above); but the Unesco link convinced me to keep it. Cheers!
agree Claudia Brauer : Thank you soooo much... I used it today!

Benemérito de las Américas

Is this not reffering to the town in Mexico?

http://www.e-local.gob.mx/work/templates/enciclo/chiapas/mun...

His birthplace perhaps?
Note from asker:
The town in Chiapas was named after his title. He was born in a Guelatao, Oaxaca, a Zapotec town. He was the first indigenous president of Mexico.

National Hero of the Americas

Referencia: Collins Robert Unabridged Spanish/English Dictionary
Note from asker:
Even though most Mexicans admire him, we don't usually consider him a "hero." I think the main reason is that he was the first president without a military background.
Peer comment(s):

agree John Marais : Yes. 'Benemeritos' in Franco's Spain were 'national heroes'

Thanks, John.
agree Charles Davis : In this case I would be inclined to cut "National" and just put "Hero of the Americas", since this is apparently a transnational designation

Thanks, and I agree with you , Charles.
