Como se oberva, la tasa de mortalidad no está basada en el número de habitantes, sino en una unidad de tiempo. Es decir, se produjeron X casos nuevos (muertes) entre XX personas-tiempo. El resultado puede expresarse del mismo modo por personas-año. Para ello, basta con dividir el número de fallecimientos por la duración del período.

The last part doesn't square for me. What I take it is that they are saying that if you take, say, 12 deaths per year, and divide the year by, say, months, the answer is 12, then divide the total deaths by this number and the answer is 1, in other words, 1 death per month (on average) which would be right.
