español term

con peineta de jamón

español al inglés Arte/Literatura Cocina / Gastronomía Menu
Putting the finishing touches to my modern restaurant menu now. Thanks for all the help so far!

This is a decoration given to a starter, some hummus, and it is served "con peineta de jamón". The designer of the dish has confirmed that this is a piece of jamón serrano placed to look like a "peineta" decorative comb. The restauarant aims for the upmarket diner, but I don't think we can expect the English speaking diners to know what a peineta is.

http://webosfritos.es/2008/12/pastel-de-alcachofa-con-peinet... This is not ham, but artichoke, but gives a good idea of what the decoration will look like.

A peineta, in the context of cookery, would also stimes be like a "teja", as in this photo: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6bHYMv7lck4/SwL4rYEm5KI/AAAAAAAAAw...

topped with a crest of ham

Looking at the photo gave me this impression of what it might look like. The word fringe came to mind too, but as that normally hangs downwards thought it might be a bit odd.

Thanks!
agree Adriana Martinez : I like crest (that's exactly what I thought when I saw the photo) and I like your "gourmet" way of naming it. Cheers!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Although loathe to leave the image of the peineta behind, I felt most comfortable with this one in English. Thanks to all for great suggestions."

Spanish Ham (presented as an ornamental comb)

Well, it is an option.

Iberian Ham Snap/Comb

A suggestion. Like a brandy snap.
Or why not comb?
Like honeycomb (in the context of a posh menu)
(Perhaps if you saw it or a dodgy menu you might do a double take).

I still think you would think of honeycomb, rather...

Will keep thinking, too.

You might also consider "tuile" but I am not so sure that this isn't moving too far away from the visual form (specifically, the holes).

"wafer" might work too (like those they put on ice-cream desserts). I still like comb, for the record, though it is the most literal. It's such a Spanish thing it seems a shame to lose it if there's no need!
