Spanish term

cardiopatía mixta

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Cardiology
This appears listed as a cause of death in a death certificate from Mexico.

"Causa de la Muerte: CARDIOPATíA MIXTA"

I can't think of a common, standard English medical term that would say what I think this means: multiple cardiac problems.

Thank you for your help.

¡Suerte!
Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 1, 2010:
Marzia Nicole Bucca Jun 1, 2010:
Ciao Joseph... so the most appropriate answer should Caminante7's answer... I am glad you posted this question, it's a very interesting discussion. :)
Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 1, 2010:
cardiopathy / cardiomyopathy Hi all and thank you all for your suggestions and comments. As I wrote earlier, I think there is a difference between 'cardiomyopathy' and 'cardiopathy'. My reliable Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary says:

Cardiomyopathy: "disease of the myocardium, especially that caused by primary disease of the heart muscle." The myocardium is the "middle layer of the walls of the heart, composed of cardiac muscle."

Cardiopathy: "Any disease of the heart." A much broader definition.

¡Mil gracias Pedro!
disagree Félicien Sirois : Careful... "cardiopathy" or "cardiomyopathy"? While I understand the definition (as well as the difference between the two terms), I find very few sources for the phrase "mixed cardiopathy," hence my apprehension to recommend it.

combined cardiomyopathy

Note from asker:
Félicien: THANK you for your suggestion; however your nlm/nih reference says " ... Combined cardiomyopathy and skeletal myopathy ..." which in this case means that these two separate diseases are combined/appear at the same time. It doesn't support the term "combined cardiomyopathy".
Peer comment(s):

disagree Pedro P Barrero MD : combined cardiomyopathy

combined heart diseases

"mixed cardiomyopathy"?

I have just found this thread... maybe it helps! :)
Note from asker:
Ciao Marzia and thanks for your comment and reference. I saw this thread when I was trying to find a translation, before I posted my question. Notice that they wrote 'cardiomyopathy' which restricts the disease to the heart muscle, whereas 'cardiopathy' ('cardiopatía') is a broader term (I believe). Also there weren't too many google hits for the term. I'm hoping that one of our medical colleagues comes up with a suggestion.
