unsold merchandise (remaining in store)
I've come to the conclusion that this is company jargon, not industry jargon and that unless it's for the company newsletter, you can probably do without it.
If the text is for the general public then unsold merchandise/clothing/articles might do. I suspect though, that the "gardé magasin"bit is there to warn people that not all unsold merchandise is kept in store - some will be sent back to the warehouse. That's their way of saying they can't donate more than x amount because a proportion of unsolds are "sent back".

Note from asker:
The idea of unsold merchandise being used for donations makes more sense to me here than anything that's been discounted or marked down. Thanks! |

Comment: "Thanks again everyone. I'm going with Emma's take on it, backed up by BDF's refs and Tony's logic!"

in-store discounted items
GDT indicates that "décoté" relates to "undervalued" and that "décote" (noun) relates to "discount".
gardé magasin = kept in the store / shop. ("in-store" sounds much neater to me though).

I don't see any logic in these being 'discounted' items, surely they are stock that has remained unsold even after having been marked down? And items that have been kept in the store, rather than being returned to some central depot, for example.
I suspect there is a neat technical term fr this in retaling jragon, but I'm afraid I don't know it; I know in a cake shop they refer to 'overs', but I doubt that's much help here!

: Why can't they be "discounted" items? The noun "décolte" means "discount". Also, I believe that "items" is a better translation than "articles" here.

décoté means several things, 'discounted' is only one of them... ut it seems to me that discounted items would be still on display for sale, whereas these sound like unsolds to me? /articles-schmarticles.... it's only a placeholder to keep it all together

overstocked items
I realize that this does not have the 'décoté' meaning in it, but it seems to be close to the original idea of offering items that are probably not going to be sold in the store.
The owners of the Fashion Discount Clothing store in downtown Weston have decided to donate more than 900 overstocked items to the local Goodwill store, an act they say they want to make an annual event.

The Book Outlet also donates overstock to hospitals, nursing homes, soup kitchens, food banks, public and charter schools
