This is a machine that scans books and the user manual mentions "Thicker (Curved-Page) Books" as opposed to "Thinner (Flat-page) books".

Flat-opening v curved-opening: How the pages present to be scanned i.e. completely flat or arched and requiring special treatment to correct distortion of characters. Ring-bound books always lie flat.
