German term

Fundschicht

German to English Science Geology
Here is the context:

I am guessing it is something along the lines of a layer yielding a find or discovery, but I am missing a more compact way to say this in English. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

find layer

fossiliferous horizon

Fund in this case (Pliocene period) would most probably refer to fossil material (and not archaeological material).
The term level or horizon or stratum is used for Schicht.

(= my research area)
Example sentence:

The fossiliferous horizons of the section are referred on the basis of pollen analysis to the Pliocene
