German term

Horizont

German to English Science Geology
This term crops up a number of times in my document about Afghan Cretaceous geology, most interestingly when it talks about a Seeigelhorizont. A Tagarin-Horizont is also mentioned once. Is this best translated simply as zone or level? TIA?

other references Here is another one:

"Die wichstigsten Kalkenhorizonte, wie z.B. der karbonatische Inoceramenhorizont, zeichnen sich durch eine gewisse Konstanz aus und erleichtern dadurch die lithologische Korrelation der Profile."

Inoceramus is a faunal genus.

Soil Horizons (layers): Soil is made up of distinct horizontal layers; these layers are called horizons. They range from rich, organic upper layers (humus and topsoil) to underlying rocky layers ( subsoil, regolith and bedrock).
