Spanish term

cocina cercana

Spanish to English Other Cooking / Culinary
This term comes from the following excerpt: "Fogones de reconocido prestigio se funden con una cocina cercana, aligerada y equilibrada que se armoniza sin perder la personalidad con los nuevos tiempos."

Here's another example: "En el ámbito rural hay que desarrollar una cocina cercana con productos de la tierra”

Discussion

Carol Gullidge Nov 17, 2009:
Constantinos I know! So I really wonder why you are so adamant about how the English language should be spoken... Please believe me, that quoting literally from the dictionary rarely works in any language, let alone English
Constantinos Faridis (X) Nov 17, 2009:
para decir la verdad yo no hablo inglés...solo conozco pocas cosas
Carol Gullidge Nov 17, 2009:
Constantinos, re dictionary defs in the same way that you translated cocina as cuisine, and not cooking, kitchen or cookery, a similar decision has to be taken regarding cercana. The context has to be taken into account, as well as idiomacy in the target language. Which is why the literal translation doesn't work here. Quite simply, "near" and "cuisine" don't collocate in English. I'm sure you must have come across this sort of thing in your own numerous language pairs.
Constantinos Faridis (X) Nov 17, 2009:
cocina local - local cuisine.
cocina tradicional - traditional cusine.
cocina cercana - __???
Carol Gullidge Nov 17, 2009:
well Constantinos if there were only one way to translate every single foreign word or expression, then we'd all be out of a job! Clients would simply all be able to look everything up in the dictionary, and this site would certainly be redundant - as would we all!
Constantinos Faridis (X) Nov 17, 2009:
oh! y la "cocina local" ¿cómo la traduciríais?
Carol Gullidge Nov 12, 2009:
no doubt! although that's perhaps beside the point, if I understand you correctly (not totally sure that I do!). I don't see food miles as being crucial to the interpretation, but just an added bonus that might attract certain discerning (!) and environmentally-conscious people. I think the main point is that they want to encourage "cocina cercana", using "productos de la tierra" - or local produce - as in the 2nd example given.
Noni Gilbert Riley Nov 12, 2009:
More "quality tourism"... ...and from the UK there no doubt!
Carol Gullidge Nov 12, 2009:
Food miles yet in the Alpujarras it's a different story
Noni Gilbert Riley Nov 12, 2009:
Food miles How I wish this were likely to be a consideration included in the concept of cercana... not yet in Spain (at least in our area - Castilla y León), I fear. People glaze over with incomprehension every time I talk about it....

local cuisine

regional cuisine

I think this is what they're promoting: freshness, low food miles, and local produce
Peer comment(s):

agree HugoSteckel : I personally like "local produce", even if the sentence would have to be changed around.

many thanks hjs45! I think the local produce is covered by "productos de la tierra". For "tierra", I'm also thinking of the French "du terroir", vaguely meaning local...(+ implying a whole load more)
agree Evans (X) : yes, regional cuisine using local produce is what I think they are getting at

sorry, but near cuisine isn't English//too literal a quote, obvious to an EN speaker, and "near" is by no means the only dictionary def. And in any case, a Neutral would have sufficed to make your point - as I originally posted on your answer
