Navío

Spanish to English Other Military / Defense
This terms comes in a long list of Spanish Military Ranks such as
"Capitán de navío"
"Teniente de navío"
"Alférez de navío" etc.

We cannot simply translate it as "warship" as there are also ranks like "Capitán/Teniente/Alférez de Fragata/Corbeta. And "Warship" is a general term which includes any "Fragata/corbeta/navío".
I also thoght about "Man of War", however, I see in several online dictionaries that a Man of War is a type of warship used in past centuries. Can anyone help?

Ranks have equivalence I strongly suggest that you not use "Frigate Captain" and "Corvette Captain". These names mean nothing in English (unlike, say, in Portuguese, Italian, and French). The corresponding ranks are, respectively Commander (NATO code OF-4) and Lieutenant Commander (NATO code OF-3). That applies to the UK and the US, by the way.

Oh, and I do agree with Victoria Frazier's suggestion: Navy Captain. That will prevent confusion with the rank of Captain in some other armed service branch, which happens to be three steps down (NATO code OF-2)

I am translating the Spanish Ministry of Defence's website, so we re looking for UK English. However, I NEED to put something for "NAVÍO" in order to distinguish it from a Frigate Captain and a Corvette Captain...

Modern In your Query, the 'navio' always appears as a part of the rank-title, so that each rank should be a separate query in a way. Still, the point is the same. On wooden ships of the past, English-language ranks included the word as in 'ships-captain', 'ship's mate', 'ship's surgeon'; in the modern U.S. Navy, however, the ranks are reduced to 'Captain, First Mate, etc. I'm not familiar with the British navy's ranking titles, but the real issue will be which target country your text is destined for and what its navy titles are. If it lacks a navy, the flavor of the English language used there may help to determine titles that would be most suitable in your context.

Ship-of-the-Line Captain (French - capitaine de vaisseau; German - Linienschiffskapitän; Spanish - Capitán de Navío; Croatian - Kapetan bojnog broda) is a rank that appears in several navies. The name of the rank derives from the fact the rank corresponded to command of one a ship of the largest class of warship, the Ship-of-the-Line, as opposed to smaller types of warship (corvettes and frigates). It is normally above the rank of Frigate Captain.

The question was actually ill-posed. It's not about Navío (ship) but about three specific Spanish Navy ranks (NATO Codes OF5/OF-2/OF-1). The first two are the same in the US and the UK (desertfox had the first one correct) and, as noted, there is a variation for "Alférez de Navío "

capitaine de vaisseau is the French translation. In English you use captain by itself.
Navio is a ship or a vessel.

My military dictionary says "captain" for both US and UK navies.

I can't put just "Captain". "Capitán" on its own in Spanish is Captain in the "Ejército de Tierra", but this is a Captai in the navy and "NAVÍO" is a must in the translation.
