А я и не считаю, что оппозиция в состоянии изменить что-либо к лучшему в Ххххх! Изменится только лишь жаргон! От «спасителей нации» (оппозиции - переводчик) веет тотальной депрессией – «колхоз без сельсовета». I need a native (informative for Engl. speakers) idiomatic expression depicting this. Thus the auther states that however eloquent the opposiition figures might be, they look dull and square, like колхоз без сельсовета..Thanks!

Discussion

Victor Zagria (asker) Sep 22, 2009:
to engltrans 'motherless child' and 'sovietless collective farm' - the device I've been looking for. Thank you, engltrans
engltrans Sep 18, 2009:
Soviet of the village, and I think Sovietless like motherless child would sound more convincing...
Ellen Kraus Sep 17, 2009:
I would compare the collective farm without the village soviet with a flock of sheep without the bellwether.
gutbuster Sep 17, 2009:
похоже, для полнейшего понимания в переводе не должно быть ни колхоза, ни сельсовета

AND WHAT ABOUT " a flock of sheep without the bellwether " ?
Peer comment(s):

neutral gutbuster : collective farm - общественное объединение, village soviet - орган власти. Идиоматика: движение есть, нет поводыря. У вас дословный и добросовестный перевод

but I suggested a comparison with a flock of sheep without ........."
agree Margarita : I think "a flock of sheep..." works well in this context.

thank you, Margarita !
neutral Dorene Cornwell : this version is too literal but might be needed for historical framing.

yes, I know - but that´s why I suggested to use the idiomatic phrase instead (flock of sheep without ....)

a hen coop/house without a rooster

Peer comment(s):

agree Susan Welsh : I like this, but you should say either "hen house" or "chicken coop." For some reason, hens don't live in "coops" and chickens don't live in "houses." Don't ask me why.

yes, henhouse is better, thanks :-)... it's very competitive in here and i was in a bit of a hurry as we all are :-)
disagree gutbuster : the opposition claims to be nation's saviors, a rooster(1 off) per hen house sounds somewhat incongruous

i think you need to read the asker's question again... it's the opposition figures that look dull... like hens without a rooster...

--------------------------------------------------

The ship of fools is an allegory that has long been a fixture and reminder in Western literature and art. The allegory depicts a vessel populated by human inhabitants who are deranged, frivolous, or oblivious, passengers aboard a ship without a pilot, and seemingly ignorant of their own direction.

or
"Ship without a sail". This one, however, doesn't have that irony as in "колхоз без сельсовета"
Peer comment(s):

agree Eng-Rus/Rus-Eng : I like this

Thank you!
disagree gutbuster : too strong, the opposition commands respect everywhere

whether it's too strong or not, the asker should decide judging from the tone of the article. Opposition is often laughed at in Russia and Ukraine.
