Just want to know if there is an alternative to/more common term than 'basic studies' here (for a UK audience). Thanks.
Es de Lasarte y tiene 27 años. Realizó **estudios básicos** y ha tenido trabajos muy variados: cocinero, carnicero, tabernero… Es profesor de la Asociación de Amigos del Bertsolarismo en la enseñanza reglada. Es miembro de Hamaika Bertute. Ha participado en muchos campeonatos y certámenes. Participa por primera vez en el Campeonato Nacional. Se formó en la escuela de bertsolaris de Lasarte.

In college general course requirements must be met in order to complete the first two years of studies.

Yes, that's how I would interpret it. Otherwise, he would have written "secundaria" or, since he is 27 now, probably "bachillerato".
Nobody in Spain would associate "básico" with "secundaria" or "bachillerato", for sure.

If he is 27, then he must have left school at 14, and then it was only "primary education".
But now compulsory education goes up to 16, which includes part of the "secondary education" period. Secondary (meaning non-primary and non-university) education, is split into two phases: ESO = Educación Secundaria Obligatoria" (4 years) followed by Bachillerato (2 years), if one intends to move on to University, or by Formación Profesional.
