Hi
How do I translate this in this context? The hotel residents have been watching a the hotel burn and were asked to leave:
"Смущенные, мы стали расходиться. Нам действительно нечего было делать, а пожар - крупное развлечение. И бесплатное. Кэн, я, банда тинейджеров и эФ-мэн - ни у кого из нас не было денег. Мы были народные массы отеля. У народа нет денег. Деньги есть у серьезных людей."
Thanks

We were the hotel's rabble / common masses / lower classes
Although above all else I would suggest 'proletariat' - I think the Russian flavor would be a great fit here.

Rachel Douglas
: I like just plain "the masses" for the mock leftist terminology. But not "of hotel". And repeat it in the next sentence for "народ", to drive home the sense. "We were the masses at this hotel. The masses don't have money."

: Good one, much lighter than traditional (sociological) class designations, which are clunkier in EN than in RU.

the have-nots of the hotel
I mean that *of* should necesserily be used, not *at* (the latter might have sounded more appropriate in a less contextual-related setting)

The have-nots of all nations and situations have always been "plebs" (vs "nobles"), "proletariate" vs "bourgeoise", "dregs" vs "men of weight" etc actually because they have nothing in this life
