Russian term

отплеваться/отхаркаться

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hi

Can anyone explain the difference between these two words in this context as they both seem to mean 'to spit':

"Кэмпбэлл и Пэрэс, намочив платки и набросив их на лица, ушли в дым. Кто-то из них разбил стекло в окне, и дым потянуло из коридора. Выскочив подышать, отплевавшись и отхаркавшись, они вернулись из второго похода со злополучным матрасом. Из черной дыры в брюхе матраса вздымались черный и серый дымы. "

Thanks

spit or express disgust / spit or clear one´s voice

with these additional synonyms your options are somewhat richer.

e.g. you might formulate the passage e.g. "expressing their disgust they spat (out)and noisily cleared their throat".

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tatyana Chis : in this case it has nothing to do with "express disgust "

neutral RusAnna : I agree with vidordure. They were clearing their throats because they had inhaled smoke.

retching (see below)

these two are an unpleasent but natural reaction of one's organism to inhaling smoke, you as a native speaker are in a better position to come with the right word for it.

Having jumped outside for a breather, after a thorough retching session, they returned...
