I'm translating some "botones de navegación". Just a list that incudes "volver" and "atras" as two separate items. Does anyone know what distinction is intended? I'd be inclined to translate both of them as "back".

I would use "return" to quit something you are currently viewing. Just like KudoZ has the option to "Return to KudoZ list" - if I were to use that option right now, my answer wouldn't be recorded here :)
Whereas if I were to use the "back" option on my browser right now, I would still be viewing your question, but would lose all the text.
I guess you could say that to use the "return" option means you want to quit, and the "back" option means you simply go back one step.
