French term

de manière enchaînée

French to English Medical General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hi,

I'm really struggling with 'de manière enchaînée' here:

Ces étapes de sécurisation biologique ont été évaluées pour leur efficacité dans l’élimination de l’agent infectieux potentiellement présent, dans les modèles expérimentaux reconnus par les experts et les Autorités, étape par étape et aussi de manière enchaînée.

Thanks

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): writeaway

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Another possibility, where "de manière enchaînée" means "considering all steps together" (as a series, like Marco suggested). The different steps to eliminate infectious agents have been evaluated step by step and as one unit, from beginning to end.
Peer comment(s):

agree SJLD : yes I think this is the best solution - "de manière enchaînée" refers back to "ont été évaluées" - so each step is evaluated as well as the biosafety process as a whole

step by step, one after the other

Hello,

I highly doubt you'd say "continuously" here in English.

step by step, one after the other

I hope this helps,

This usually means just "one after the other". I don't think this has to do with any kind of "logical coherence".

An good example:

Possibilité de laver et de sécher de manière enchaînée, 2.5 kg de linge... (clearly means wash and dry right afterwards)

Yeah, "logical coherence" is implied, but that's not you'd translate it here.

sequence:
serial arrangement in which things follow in logical order or a recurrent pattern; "the sequence of names was alphabetical"; "he invented a technique to determine the sequence of base pairs in DNA"
Peer comment(s):

agree Emma Paulay : This is how I understand it. Each stage was checked individually as was the sequence as a whole, or the succession of stages.

Yes, step-by-step but also co-relatively, one step in reference to another.

and (also) linked together

If "étape par étape" is translated as "step by step" or "one at a time", then I think that "de manière enchaînée" should convey the idea of a "non-stop" manner: "linked together".
Peer comment(s):

neutral MatthewLaSon : I wouldn't say "linked together" in English, but rather "one after the other." You have the right meaning, though.
