Mr X is a director who won an award at a short film festival about ski:
When asked about the inspiration behind the film, he said: “I wanted to show how dedicated Sash, David , Rob, and Dane were towards getting some solid shots on rails in Calgary.” Mr X dedicated himself to documenting these Early Season Sessions because he “wanted to show that regardless of how much work it takes, whenever there is enough snow on the ground in town, these guys - like lots of other Calgary riders - are pumped to find a new set up and beat themselves up on it until it works."
I am struggling with this chunk, especially with "pumped" and "beat themselves up" (it usually means to feel guilty, doesn't it????). Could someone please reword/explain it for me?
Thanks in advance

The sport involves risks in learning how to master the specific set-up -- guard rails or whatever it is they think they can ski down. But they're excited and enthusiastic about doing it and not quitting until they have done it right.
