Freifeld-Solarkraftwerk

German to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation
"Die GmbH setzt mit der Summe von 20 Freifeld-Solarkraftwerken, die allein im Jahr 2008 in Europa schlüsselfertig errichtet wurden, einen neuen Maßstab im Bereich der Lieferung und Erzeugung umweltfreundlicher Energie. "

Thanks in advance

photovoltaic power plant

These are generally known simply as PV (photovoltaic) power plants, but also occasionally as utility-scale power plants, as opposed to individual PV systems or modules on single buildings, even though the latter may be grid-connected.

free-field solar farm [free-field solar/PV generation plant/facility]

There are some sources for these options (not that many because the concept of "free-field", as opposed to rooftop installation, seems to be relatively new, at least in the English-speaking world).

See, for example,

"DayStar’s Photovoltaic Foil ™ solar cell manufacturing process can accommodate a wide range of cell sizes and shapes meeting the needs of both current and future PV markets. As a result, DayStar’s line of Photovoltaic Foil ™ solar cells enable a portfolio of new products including traditional flat plate modules for rooftop and large <B>free-field solar farms</B>, unique flexible roofing and building integrated materials, smaller consumer electronic charging products, and ultra-lightweight cells for airborne vehicles, near-space and space applications. TerraFoil™ cells are made on relatively rigid materials designed to serve as an alternative to Silicon-based solar cells and will compete within the industry for use in existing flat plate module manufacturing operations."

"Nanosolar targets the market for <B>"free field"</B> solar-generation facilities, Chief Executive Martin Roscheisen said, in which plants are built in open fields on the outskirts of a city. It's a concept that's popular in Europe and Asia, and less so in California, where the state emphasizes getting solar panels on 1 million roofs."

open-field solar-generation {plant, facility}

You will find several "free-field" quotes in Google, but for the USA, this would say nothing (and is usually a German translation). The link here puts it in quotes but then has to explain it.

The term open field would convey more info in the USA, imo.

Same quote as Steffan, a completely different interpretation. Imagine that!
