2.4.2. Body sway measurements

The body movements performed by humans are usually called “body sway”. Typically, the term “body sway” is used to describe the **extent of the centre point of pressure (COP) or the centre of gravity (COG) excursions**. It is possible to measure body sway with a simple technology, for example, by using a “swaymeter” (Lord et al. 1991a) or Wright’s ataxiameter (Overstall et al. 1977, Brocklehurst et al. 1982, Nayak 1987). The swaymeter measures displacements of the body at the waist level, whereas the ataxiameter can be used to define sway as an angular movement of the body around the ankle joint. Also, an inclinometry-based method has been developed to provide information about body sway (Viitasalo et al. 2002).

The body sway meter allows measurement of **body movements** in a single plane, providing a measure of postural stability. Body sway was measured with an apparatus similar to the Wright ataxiameter [17]. With a string attached to the waist, all body movements over a period of time were integrated and expressed as mm sway on a digital display. The contribution of vision to postural control was eliminated by asking subjects to close their eyes. ...

RELATION BETWEEN BODY SWAY AND SUBJECTIVE SCORE
The results show that the scores attributed by each normal subject to the stability of their upright stance reflected the actual sway values recorded by the dynamometric platform. This correspondence was particularly evident under the eyes closed condition, where, regardless of the position of the feet (together or apart) and the consequent large difference in the corresponding sway values, the score closely reflected the **magnitude of body sway**
