In the 'virtualreview' article, it is stated: "Chinese can sit US college entrance exam in Beijing". So, I imagine it is acceptable either way. I would probably write it to best fit the tone of the entire document.

Apparently, in the USA and in Australia you might use "for"while in Britain you just sit ... exams. Am I right?

Some more info We write these exact words in a REPORT CARD at the end of the year: "MUST SIT (FOR) ORAL and LITERATURE EXAMS in February" and this means the kid didn`t promote to the upper form. He needed a 6 as a FINAL AVERAGE and couldn`t reach the required standard. Therefore he`ll have to sit for these exams in February again!

@Taña - you are so right! I found many examples - . . 'applicants must sit English-Japanese and Japanese-English translation examinations'. I believe we have a backward habit of incorrectly stating that we must 'sit for' exams in AE, and it is incorrect.

across the Atlantic and therefore, only audience will determine this. "Must sit oral and written examinations in December sounds fine to me.

@debrite. That´s is why context is so important. Patsy still needs to confirm "word for word" what the exact context is: IMO, put it down to perhaps British English, but there is no need for the "for". This may well be a case of different styles

Good, Taña ~ I believe then "for" must be added, as you could not write, '. . . must sit oral examinations' - 'must sit for oral exams' would work with the entire sentence you have written.

If I understand you then, but you will have to provide the full sentence to verify the context: ".. must sit oral and written examinations in December". In the plural form as separate examinations. Hope I understand you.

Some more info The ORAL exam is not related to the Literature one. They are two different exams, one on Oral Work and the other one is on Literature!

examination having an oral component, but then I could be dead wrong or left school too long ago!! (smile!). But you may have a Literature I and II examination. More context is definitely needed to determine the true context!!

Patsy: I agree with debrite. More context is needed. What I would add is this. If the oral part is related to the "literature" exam, then it is one examination having different components. I personally am not familiar in the case of a literature

ALMOST identical You`re right! But in this case I`m interested in the word EXAM or EXAMS. However, I wrote it like that because there were different suggestions :
Sit an Oral and Literature exam
Sit Literature exam (without the article)
and Sit for an Oral and Literature exam

I believe the confusion between similarly posted questions is where to use “for”: i.e. “to sit an examination” or “to sit for an examination”. IMO, as it relates to this particular question the “for” is not required.
