French term

adhérent

French to English Bus/Financial Law (general)
Cannot find the difference in meaning between adhérent and membre, as in the following:

Les ressources de l'Association proviennent :
- Des droits d'admission versés par les adhérents,
- Des cotisations annuelles des adhérents,

Le patrimoine de l'Association est formé :
- Des droits d'admission des membres,

Thanks for any help.

agree rkillings : Elegant variation again.

agree Jack Dunwell : The useage is the same here, tho' adhérent has additional connotations of "supporter"

agree Michael GREEN : The only doubt I have is whether this reading of the text is correct - ie "cotisations annuelles" and "droits d'admission" are paid by the same people (ie "adhérents" = "membres" in practice).

neutral Bourth (X) : If the text nowhere spells out a distinction, then they are likely to be the same thing, but it is always possible that they differentiate between "classes" of membership in this way.

disagree Mpoma : See my answer and Bourth's. Lawyers don't (generally) use 2 different terms for no reason, therefore one shouldn't assume this is the case here.

What about this?

Note added at 2 mins (2008-03-18 09:11:02 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

This implies that payment is made, whereas member doesn't necessarily involve any payment.

Furthermore, the text only mentions 'cotisations annuelles des adhérents', not 'des membres', which reinforces my point above.

Peer comment(s):

agree Mpoma : yes, one thought I have is that "adhérent" in such cases **may** be something like "signatory": "signatory members", etc. Or at least some status with more liability/responsibility. GDT has "adhering party" whic may apply in certain cases.

Re Graham Mclachlan's answer: why did the French lawyers deliberately make a distinction in this legal text between "membre" and "adhérent"? Lawyers don't do that for no reason.

See Bourth's answer.

A pacte, for example, may have initial signatories, who are the membres, and later adhérents, who are not members, but who are bound by the terms of the agreement.

"Adhering party" is the term given by GDT.
