In this instance, ask and tell are two ends of the assertiveness continuum. The assertiveness scale measures the degree to which you are perceived as attempting to influence the thinking and actions of others. *Ask* assertive people tend to assert themselves through questions, suggestion, etc. *Tell* assertive people tend to assert themselves through statements, etc.
