: The questioner is from the UK where loans are repaid & not amortised, unless written off by lender to borrower's delight! Unaware if the target-readership is US/Can., I take your AE point. Settle a loan is, in BE, arguably ambiguous for arranging one.

I wrote settle as well. All my dictionaries support my use of amortize/-ation. Maybe a UK/US difference?
