Discussion

Simon Hollingsworth Nov 28, 2007:
Here are a couple of sites with pictures. They appear to indicate that "pointing" is what we are talking about. My understanding of pointing is the making good of brickwork, involving the removal of word and damaged bricks and the restoration of mortar...

I'm afraid it's not just "brick pointing":
Вычинка кирпичной кладки требовала не только хорошего материала – полнотелого красного кирпича, желательно старого, – от разбираемых зданий, но и высококвалифицированных каменщиков

disagree Alexander Demyanov : dismantling parts of brickwork may be a step in a "вычинка" process, but it's the same as translating "переШить" as "cut".//You may need to first dismantle something to restore something but that doesn't make "dismantle" = "fix"/"restore"

brick pointing

I'm not sure of the exact meaning of вычинка, so it may be that this answer is too specific and Alexander's more general "brickwork restoration" is more appropriate.

Pointing consists of replacing the mortar between the bricks, without actually dismantling the brick facing. Here is some more info:

agree Simon Hollingsworth : I would use "repointing" but this is what was done when my house was restored and it applied to all the work performed. If you are looking for the term commonly used in the UK, this is it.

Either term works, though it looks like more is involved than just (re)pointing, see Alexander's note.
neutral Alexander Demyanov : Hi Jennifer. Pls see "Note added" in my answer.

Thanks, yes, sounds like it's more extensive than just (re)pointing.

You might use also masonry instead of brickwork.
