Spanish term

ocuparon su interés

Spanish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Diego Rivera portraits
Otros retratos que también **ocuparon su interés**, son aquellos que fueron hechos a petición de sus modelos, los cuales nos permiten complementar la visión que tenía de la sociedad mexicana de los años 40 y 50.

He was also **very interested** in those paintings that he created at the request of the person portrayed.

I don't want to use the phrase in a solution. Restructuring the sentence would be good, but I can't arrive at something that works.

agree Margarita Gonzalez : Yep. Or perhaps, "commissioned portraits also captured his interest", now that I think twice.

Pictures that were requested by his models were of **special interest to him** and they allow us a view of Mexican society in the 40s and 50s through his eyes.

devoted his attention

Suggested translation:
He also devoted his attention to other portraits, those requested by his models, which permit us to add to our understanding of his vision of Mexican society of the 40’s and 50’s.

I can’t agree that “captured his interest” is quite right here. We wouldn’t say in English, “writing that article really captured my interest.” I would say he “devoted his attention” to the works in question.
Peer comment(s):

agree Sp-EnTranslator : or even 'engaged his attention'. Quite valid your argument, your suggestion 'captures' the original in meaning as close as possible, imo.
