I do not have a written context. If would be the prison officer who deals with an offender (i.e. lets him/her use the telephone) after the charges have been read to him/her and a bond has been fixed. It could be just "oficial" but I wonder if there is a more specific term. Thanks.

Antes que nada, y debido que la palabra "deputy" tiene varias acepciones, incluyo un enlace que puede ser de utilidad (por ejemplo, para aquéllos que quieran saber cómo usar el término en terminología de negocios, gubernamental, etc.:

La sugerencia de desertfox no es nada mala, pero me parece que podría ser un poco más precisa. Un deputy no es un "replacement sheriff" o un "substitute sheriff", en cuyo caso podría ser alguien que ni siquiera trabaja de tiempo completo en el dep. de policía y que sólo funge como un substituto cuando el alguacil está fuera. Un "deputy" es (como dice también el enlace) un "assistant sheriff", de manera que es una posición permanente. "assistant sheriff", por cierto, no es "asistente del sheriff", lo cual suena a secretario y aparte sería "sheriff's assistant", sino que la traducción correcta es "alguacil asistente" (o, dependiendo de a quién va dirigido el texto - porque ya sabemos que en el español en EUA a veces se mezclan los títulos oficiales en inglés - "sheriff asistente", aunque no me gusten para nada los pochismos)

There is a Kudoz entry for subalguacil/alguacil delegado. I even found deputado. I shot the sherrif but I didn't shoot the Deputy, by Bob Marely is translated as deputado (but into Portuguese!).
Diputado is the Spanish term (but used in politics, rather than elsewhere).

| Yes I have checked WR, since there was a link from the first answerer. As you say, they are suggestions, none of them stemming from someone familiar with that particular field. I have experience with HM Prison Services but not with the USA equivalent. I do not feel confident enough with the proposed translations because I am still lacking the background specified above.
