Estado Providencia Dear Lila
I know fine well that Estado Providencia is normally translated as Welfare State, as is Estado de Bienestar. The whole point of the question was that I needed to find a different translation as both terms are used in the text, and not for exactly the same thing. I also know that Managerial State is normally Estado Gestor, but as the original text was written by Catalans, I thought maybe they used a different term. What is meant is certainly a type of management. Probably just have to paraphrase it.
Anyway, thanks again

Dear Pamela, I find it a bit harsh on your part to say Welfare State as a translation to your question "is of no use", since you are dismissing some very reliable translations of the term ... I am an expert on this subject, and in fact doing post-graduate work on this matter specifically, which is why I answered your question... If you refer to texts such as Pierre Rosanvallon's "La nouvelle question sociale: Repenser l’État-providence" you will see it has been translated as "The New Social Question: Rethinking the Welfare State", and "La nueva cuestión social: repensar el Estado providencia", 1995 ; Ed. Manantial, Buenos Aires, 1995.
To name but a few others, United Nations (ECLAC) translates Estado Providencia as Welfare State: "El Estado Providencia” (Welfare State) no Puede Asumirlo Todo y las Financiaciones Públicas Clásicas han Alcanzado sus Límite www.eclac.org/publicaciones/xml/7/4477/lcr1779s.pdf

THE OCDE also translates it as "Welfare State":
Bibliographie - Formation OCDE, 1981,"La crise de l’État providence", Paris, Seuil. ... and in Spanish this same book is of course translated as "La Crisis del Estado Providencia".
"Estado Providencia" is usually considered to be a synonym of "Estado BEnefactor" (Welfare State), but in your case specifically, where they are differentiating them.. you could use the term "Providence State".
The "Managerial State" that you refer to is in fact translated in Spanish as "Estado Gestor", not "Estado Providencia".

Non-ProZ.com (asker) Feb 20, 2007:
thanks for trying It is obviously a type of Welfare State, therefore Welfare State as a translation is no use. Nor are the others.
The most appropriate translation I found was in an article on Keynes, using the term Managerial State which I think is what is intended, but was hoping an expert in economic terminology might know better. Anyway, to pros, thanks for responses.

As opposed to the Welfare State, which is part of the same. (Although it all sounds like more sociological claptrap IMO).
