Camp follower is an interesting suggestion... especially with your added note. In fact, there is some doubt as to whether Adelita ever existed, or if she is just a composite of the many women who took an active part in the Revolution. However, in this case, it is a comic, so historic considerations may be irrelevant.
The second point of difficulty is that this article is rife with mexicanismos from 50 or more years ago. I guess I was hoping someone would see the phrase and immediately know exactly what it referred to. The book's editor is currently contacting the author of this chapter for more information, but thanks for the suggestions. (I'll leave the question open until I send the article).

That wasn't immediately plain from your posting. But ... in that case the term traditionally has been "camp follower" -- although more recent research has raised questions about the extent to which they followed or fought.
