French term

retours d'arrhes

French to English Bus/Financial Accounting cash register procedures
This is from a retailer's manual on cash register procedures:

EMISSION D'ARRHES

I have read the Kudoz entries about acompte vs. arrhes, but I am not sure how to translate "retour" in this case. Clearly it is not a refund (see the Kudoz posts)... my guess is that it is when the customer pays the rest of the money and receives the item. But if so, any suggestions on how to render it? Or am I completely off base?

Thank you in advance for any insight!

Sylvia Smith (asker) Aug 16, 2006:
Thank you very much for your response, Aura. However, because "arrhes" are non-refundable deposits (see the Kudoz posts), I don't think this refers to a return of the down payment (because that would be the same as a refund of the deposit). Unless you have some examples proving otherwise...?

return of deposit receipts issued

I agree with you - this appears to be about customers returning bearing a "deposit received" slip.
You could say "issuing of deposit receipts" and then "return of deposit receipts issued".

"arrhes" ARE refundable

I'm afraid I must cast some doubt on the validity of the previous refundable/non-refundable accompte/arrhes distinction.

The difference is explained here:
http://www.avocat-consultant.com/news/display.cgi?serial=53

So, if the shop is prepared to pay back double the deposit, there seems to me to be no reason why "retour" doesn't mean exactly what you first suspected - paying it back (possibly not doubling it, if consumers are unaware of their legal rights??)
