русский term
Закуска градус крадет
русский => английский
Искусство/Литература
Идиомы / Изречения / Поговорки
This is for a general audience with little knowledge of things Russian, so I don't want to use the 'English' word 'zakuska'. Which leaves me at a loss for an elegant expression.

I don't think "grub and bub" sounds MUCH more colloquial than the given expression. It IS colloquial as well - the whole phrase I mean, even though, taken separately, the words may sound quite neutral.

Note from asker:
That's a good starting point, but 'grub and bub' sounds much more colloquial than "закуска" and "градус". Any other suggestions? |

Comment: "In the end I've opted for your second phrase, as 'feeling the bub' sounds a bit vague. Anyway, thanks for your help!"

A piece of bread and you'll keep your head.
Not a real saying - I just made it up - but the meaning is clear.
Or you could use the more prosaic "Don't drink on an empty stomach."
Good luck!

Note from asker:
Vladimir is right -- the advice implied is to AVOID eating, because keeping your head would be undesirable. Still looking... |

: BUT Deborah, the idea (in Russian saying) is quite opposite - eating means wasting your drink as it prevents a person from getting drunk :-)) i.e. keeping the head IS bad :-))
