German term

in Selbstausbeutung

German to English Bus/Financial Internet, e-Commerce charity work

Translations I am considering: "on a self-funded basis" or "by my own efforts".

Discussion

Allesklar Aug 16, 2005:
Interesting point, but the German word Selbstausbeutung certainly infers just that. I reckon it would be worth checking with the client what he actually wants to say before making assumptions.

Situating the text Thanks for your response, folks.

This is someone nominating himself for a peace prize and so he is unlikely to want to appear too much of a whinger, IMO. That is why I think he is probably not inferring that he overworked. I don't see any huge improvement on my suggestion of "by my own efforts" but "independently" is cetainly better.

self exploitation

I'd use this one, because "independently" or "on my own accounts" do not bring the negative connotations of Selbstausbeutung across. I understand it as a half-ironic way of saying that he worked way too hard...

thanks! something that's all too common in our industry - quite funny how some colleagues go out of their way trying to find a value-neutral translation for it :)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I wasn't familiar with the concept but the examples in Google fit this context. It seems to be more "exploitation" in the business sense. Thanks!"

on my own account

neutral Teresa Reinhardt : I am not sure why we shouldn't respect the author

disagree Klaus Herrmann : Sorry but I think this way too far from the original.

\"off my own bat\" is the idea :)
