what is the source? Are you sure this is Spanish? I think this is a Catalan word, as far as I have seen.

I found it to be a small chapel made for a special image to be worshipped there. The word is Catalan, in Spanish it's called "camarín".

cambril m. Cambra elevada i accessible situada darrere un altar presidit per una imatge que rep una veneració especial.
Pero se usa en castellano:
Durante la época barroca se mutiló el ábside mayor para construir un cambril que acoge el grupo escultórico del Descendimiento o Santísimo Misterio notable conjunto de 1251, uno de los más importantes del románico catalán, y que preside hoy día el ábside mayor.
