Toolchain innovations from ABC GROUP save engineering time and help increase quality and transparency
OBD regulations are developing apace across the globe. Consumers are becoming increasingly environmentally aware, OEMs are driving to improve the “fix-it-right-the-first-time” rate and exploit growth in new markets. All of these factors are combining to drive up demand for engineering services and tool solutions that allow rapid implementation of OBD systems to suit markets, meet new legislative requirements, and reduce warranty liabilities.
OBD systems contain software designed into the vehicle’s on-board computer to detect emission control system malfunctions by monitoring components and systems that can cause increases in harmful emissions. When an emission-related malfunction is detected, the OBD system alerts the vehicle’s operator by illuminating the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the instrument panel. In this way, repairs can be sought promptly, which results in fewer emissions from the vehicle. Additionally, the OBD system stores important information, identifying the specific faulty component or system, the nature of the fault, when the fault happened, and the operating status. This allows for quick diagnosis and proper repair of the problem by technicians, helps owners achieve less expensive repairs, and promotes repairs done correctly the first time.
The content of OBD systems varies from application to application depending on the market in which the vehicles will be sold. Different regulations and monitoring requirements apply from country to country and depending on engine type and application (gasoline/diesel and passenger car/commercial/off-road vehicles for example). In addition, the amount of code dedicated to OEM specific diagnostics (the part aimed at reducing overall warranty liability and improving reliability as opposed to ensuring legislative compliance) also varies, naturally, according to the manufacturer concerned. In any case the amount of code on the ECU dedicated to diagnostic applications is usually in excess of 50 percent, and this is a trend that is set to continue.
This means that a large amount of the software development and test area within the OEMs is no longer core to the corporate DNA—or identity—with much of the effort involved in generating that 50% or more of code involved in ensuring legislative compliance with respective legislation.

Drinnen Luxus, draußen Abenteuer: mit dem Hausboot auf dem Shuswap Lake im Westen Kanadas.
Das trockene Treibholz knallt in den Flammen, Funken stieben empor und erlöschen im Nachthimmel. Mit dem Kaffeebecher in der Hand haben wir es uns am Lagerfeuer bequem gemacht, da lässt uns ein Rascheln am Waldrand aufhorchen: Nur ein Streifenhörnchen auf später Futtersuche, oder vielleicht doch ein Schwarzbär?
Schon ist die Stille zurück, und wir blicken in die andere Richtung, am Ufer entlang bis zu unserem Hausboot, das mit dem Bug auf dem Strand von Albas Falls liegt: „Toy Yot“ hat uns in diese Einsamkeit gebracht. Wir sind auf dem Shuswap Lake im Westen Kanadas, im bewaldeten Herzen der Provinz British Columbia.
Unser Flug um die halbe Welt und die Ankunft in der Charterbasis Sicamous erst vor wenigen Tagen scheinen auf einmal sehr weit zurückzuliegen. Dennoch erinnern wir uns nur zu gut an unsere ersten kanadischen Eindrücke ...
Mit dumpfem Dröhnen schleppen sich die vier gekoppelten, rostroten Dieselloks der „Canadian Pacific“ über die alte Stahlbrücke, die die Sicamous Narrows überspannt. Zwanzig, dreißig Waggons zählen wir, bei vierzig hören wir dann auf. Der Zug ist längst noch nicht zu Ende – hier in Nordamerika ist alles etwas größer. Auch die Hausboote.
Und davon versteht man eine Menge in Sicamous: „Willkommen in Kanadas Hausboot-Hauptstadt!“, begrüßt man uns in der Charterbasis von Twin Anchors. Wohl zu Recht, denn die schwimmenden Ferienwohnungen belegen nicht nur jeden Platz an den Schwimmstegen, sondern liegen auch dicht an dicht am Ufer der Narrows.
Bevor wir an Bord dürfen, gehen wir aber einkaufen; Versorgungsmöglichkeiten seien am See nämlich Mangelware, warnt man uns. Folglich beladen wir unseren Einkaufswagen downtown bei „Askew Foods“ bis weit über das Freibord mit Spaghetti, Cornflakes und Marshmallows.
Zurück in der Marina wartet Brian von der Twin Anchors-Crew mitten im hektischen Treiben schon auf uns. Über die Bugplattform betreten wir „Toy Yot“ zum ersten Mal und bekommen große Augen: Wäre da nicht der Steuerstand, würde man glauben, sich in einem 60- Fuß-Luxusbungalow zu befinden. Vom Kamin im Salon über den Jacuzzi mit Bartresen auf dem Pooldeck bis zum Doppelkühlschrank mit Eismaschine – kein Extra, das nicht vorhanden wäre, und alles XXL ...
Entsprechend groß fällt auch die Schalttafel aus, deren Erklärung etwas länger dauert. Welche Geräte wann über die Batterie oder nur über den Generator laufen dürfen, muss man sich bei der Elektro- Sammlung an Bord erst einmal merken. Aber Brian kennt das und bleibt geduldig, auch als wir noch ein zweites und drittes Mal nachfragen.
Es hat bereits zu dämmern begonnen, als wir mit der Einweisung durch sind. Wir schlendern noch einmal durch den kleinen Ort mit seinen flachen Holzhäusern, beobachten die Trucks,die auf dem „Trans- Canada-Highway“ in Richtung Calgary vorbeidonnern, und gönnen uns schließlich einen Büffel-Burger auf der Terrasse von „Bannock’s Café“. Fähnchen mit dem „Maple Leaf“, dem Ahornblatt, flattern in der Abendbrise, und unter der Brücke läuft ein einzelnes Hausboot auf den See hinaus. Morgen sind wir an der Reihe!
Geschafft! Aufatmen, als wir am nächsten Vormittag die Brücke von Sicamous passiert und die Sandbänke an Steuerbord hinter uns gelassen haben. Bei langsamer Fahrt und etwas Wind lässt sich unser „Caravan der See“ nämlich kaum steuern – kein Wunder, bei dem winzig anmutenden Z-Antrieb am Heck! Aber mit etwas Übung sollten wir klarkommen – schließlich sind die Boote im Charter führerscheinfrei.
Es ist sehr heiß und trocken für Anfang September. Diesige Schleier hängen über den bewaldeten Bergrücken, der Himmel ist leer, matt und farblos. Waldbrände auf US-Territorium im Süden seien die Ursache, hatte man uns erzählt. Und tatsächlich: In der Luft liegt, ganz leicht nur, der Geruch verkohlten Holzes.
Gemächlich geht es nach Nordosten, an Hungry Cove und dem Leuchtfeuer bei Marble Point vorbei. Hier und dort sieht man weiße Farbtupfer vor dem dunklen Ufergrün: andere Hausboote, die schon eine Bucht für die nächste Nacht gefunden haben oder noch auf der Suche sind wie wir.
Hinter den großen, getönten Panoramascheiben läuft die grandiose Natur ab wie ein monumentaler Kinofilm. Das weich gepolsterte Sofa am Steuerstand ist der Logenplatz.
Nach etwa drei Stunden kommen wir in den Bereich der Cinnemousin Narrows. In der Hauptsaison ist der lange Sandstrand am Westufer dieses Nadelöhrs ein beliebter Treffpunkt für ganze Hausbootflotten voller College-Studenten. Bikinis auf dem Oberdeck, Berge von Bierdosen und hämmernde Bässe bis zum Sonnenaufgang gehören dann zur Beach-Party.
Da wir aber doch ein Auge zumachen wollen, lassen wir die Narrows an Backbord liegen. Mit dem Fernglas suchen wir einige Kilometer weiter das Südufer des Sees nach einer Landestelle ab. In Roberts Bay werden wir fündig: Ein steiler Kiesstrand, und das nächste Boot liegt weit genug entfernt in der nächsten Bucht.
Das Vorschiff hebt sich, ein kurzer Ruck, wir stehen.
Der breite Bug wird auf das Land gerichtet und die Drehzahl reduziert. Zwar tuckern wir im Zeitlupentempo, das Ufer scheint dennoch sehr schnell näher zu kommen. Eine leichte Kurskorrektur, um einem dicken Brocken auszuweichen, dann noch zehn Meter, fünf, zwei, und schon knirscht und schleift es unter den Aluminiumschwimmern: Das Vorschiff hebt sich, ein kurzer Ruck, wir stehen.
Der See hallt wider vom hellen Klang der Hammerschläge
Wir bringen die Gangway aus, gehen mit dem „Ankergeschirr“ an Land: Mit einem wuchtigen Vorschlaghammer werden zwei armlange Stahlnägel in den steinigen Strand getrieben – die „Poller“ für unsere Heckleinen. Der See hallt wider vom hellen Klang der Schläge. Dann ist es geschafft – plötzlich herrscht Stille.
Direkt vor dem Bug beginnt jetzt der Urwald. Wir treten ein und folgen Wasserrauschen über einen ausgetretenen Pfad bis zu einem Bach. Farne, Flechten und bärtige Zweige, Grün in hundert funkelnden Facetten. Dazwischen schießt die Abendsonne ihre milden Strahlen schräg durchs Unterholz.
Zurück an Bord wird der Generator angeworfen, damit uns über Nacht nicht der Saft ausgeht. Dann stoßen wir mit „Glacier Beer“ auf den Törn an (auf Eis macht das „Gletscher-Bier“ seinem Namen alle Ehre). Danach bleibt uns nur noch, den Durchgang zur Gangway zu schließen – wegen der Schwarzbären.„ Die sind zwar nicht gefährlich“, hatte Brian gesagt, „können aber einen ganz schönen Zirkus veranstalten. Stellt also niemals eure Essensabfälle nach draußen!“ Denn das, erklärte er uns, wirke wie die Einladung zum SB-Büffet.
Der Morgen ist frisch und klar. Die Leinen sind an Bord, wir können los. Maschine an, rückwärts einkuppeln, Gas geben. Nichts. Mehr Gas. Nichts! Steuer rechts, Steuer links, minutenlang. Schon fällt der Blick auf das Funkgerät. Es gibt nur drei Kanäle: „Schiff-Schiff“, „Wetter“ und „Schiff-Basis“ – genau für diese Fälle wartet in Sicamous ein Service-Boot ...
Einen Versuch starten wir noch. Hin und her schwingt das Heck und bewegt sich endlich doch nach achtern. Langsam, etwas schneller, und dann ist „Toy Yot“ wieder frei. Direkt in der südlichen Ansteuerung der Cinnemousin Narrows sind gleich zwei „Sea Stores“ verankert – schwimmende Läden, die alles führen, was einem unterwegs ausgehen kann – von Superbenzin bis zum frischen Frühstücksei.
Nördlich der Enge teilt sich der See: Während der Shuswap Lake weiter nach Nordwesten führt (wo es jedoch nur wenige Landeplätze gibt), zweigt der ebenso lange Seymour Arm nach Nordosten ab. Unser Ziel liegt an seinem Ende: die Wasserfälle von Albas Falls.
Wir wechseln uns jetzt beim Fahren auf der Flybridge ab. Wenn man sich dann auf dem Pooldeck an die Reling stellt, kommt man sich wirklich vor wie auf einem Kreuzfahrtschiff. Das Wasser, das unten vorbeigurgelt, ist angenehm warm und sehr klar. Wie die anderen Hausboote legen auch wir immer wieder Badestopps ein. In den Gläsern klirren die Eiswürfel, und die Eagles kommen mit „Hotel California“ über die Bordlautsprecher:„ Such a lovely place, such a lovely place ...“.
Am übernächsten Tag schiebt sich „Toy Yot“ sanft in den feinen Sandstrand der Bughouse Bay am Ende des Sees. Eine freundliche Bucht, mit flachen Ufern und einem Hauch von Schweiz, denn weiter im Osten steigen Berge auf, erste zaghafte Ausläufer der legendären Rocky Mountains.
Uns hat aber nicht das alpine Panorama angelockt, sondern „Daniel’s Store“, der auf unserer Karte eingetragen ist: Unsere flüssigen und festen Vorräte gehen nämlich langsam zu Ende.
Dort treffen wir Josef, der den kleinen, schwimmenden Laden schmeißt. Ein Blick auf die Profi- Spiegelreflex mit dem dicken Weitwinkel von Kollege Morten genügt ihm: „Hey, macht doch ein Foto von mir!“, schlägt er vor und lacht.
Wir erfahren, dass er vor Jahren aus Tschechien eingewandert ist. Der sympathische Akzent ist noch immer hörbar. Auch in Deutschland habe er mal gelebt. „Aber hier hab ich mein Plätzchen gefunden“, sagt er und schiebt den Strohhut in den Nacken.
Sein Kumpel Billy, waschechter Kanadier, nickt und streckt wie zum Beweis seine Hände nach vorn: „Hier hab ich ‘nen Kaffee, und hier ‘nen Keks. Was brauch ich mehr? Ich bin happy!“ Das glauben wir sofort.
In der Bughouse Bay bekommen wir das „beste Bier der Welt“. Zum Abschied zaubert Josef dann noch einen ganz besonderen Schatz auf den Tresen: Für jeden gibt es eine echte Flasche „Pilsener Urquell“ aus seinem Privatbestand. „Das beste Bier der Welt“, sagt er und streicht über das staubige Etikett. „Aus der Heimat ...“
Endlich erreichen wir Albas Falls. Unser nächstes Nachbarboot liegt weit entfernt am anderen Ende der halbmondförmigen Bucht, wo der Bach über ein Bett aus glatt gewaschenen Kieseln in den See mündet. Noch steht die Sonne hoch, schnelle Daycruiser ziehen Bananen und Wakeboards über den spiegelglatten See, Jetskis schlagen Haken um Haken.
Über graue, hohlgefaulte Baumstämme klettern wir am Ufer des Albas Creek entlang, bis wir auf einen Pfad zu den Wasserfällen treffen. Der Geruch von feuchtem Moos liegt in der Luft. Bald wird es felsiger, verwinkelter, und schließlich erreichen wir die Fälle, die schäumend durch Kamine und über Klippen in die Tiefe schießen. Neben einem Stein entdecken wir die tiefen Spuren eines Tieres im Schlamm. Vielleicht von einem Bären?
Zeit zum Umkehren. Nicht nur auf dieser Wanderung, sondern auch auf diesem Törn. In zwei Tagen schon werden wir zurück in Sicamous sein und den Shuswap Lake hinter uns lassen. Aber ganz soweit ist es noch nicht. Jetzt heißt es erst einmal Treibholz sammeln, für das Lagerfeuer. Und danach, mal sehen, vielleicht ja einen Sundowner. Ganz in Ruhe ...
Es ist der große Kontrast zum Abschluss: Glitzernd ragen die gläsernen Wohn- und Bürotürme in den kobaltblauen Himmel. Yachten laufen ein und aus, und im Coal Harbour schwebt ein Wasserflugzeug zur Landung ein. Piers und Parks sind voller Menschen,und dennoch ist die Stimmung in Downtown Vancouver absolut „laid back“, wortwörtlich „zurückgelehnt“ – eben entspannt.
Eigentlich ist die Metropole mit ihrem einmaligen nordpazifischen Mix der Kulturen für uns nur ein Zwischenstopp auf dem langen Weg in die Heimat. Für einen ersten, faszinierenden Eindruck reicht die Zeit jedoch, und so bilden unsere knapp zwei Tage in Vancouver nicht nur den absoluten Gegensatz zu unserem gerade erst beendeten Törn; sie haben ihn perfekt gemacht.
Wir haben Kurs auf die Wildnis genommen; nun sind wir wieder zurück.

Luxury inside, adventure outside: Houseboat vacations on Shuswap Lake in the heart of British Columbia's interior.
Bone-dry driftwood crackles in the fire. Bursts of sparks fly up, only to scatter and die in the night sky. Coffee mug in hand, we have settled down by the campfire, when a rustling sound at the edge of the forest gives us pause: Just a chipmunk on a late foraging trip? Or perhaps it is a black bear, after all?
But soon all is quiet again, and we look in the opposite direction, our gaze following the shoreline until it takes in our houseboat, its bow pushed up the beach at Albas Falls: In more ways than one, "Toy Yot" has transported us into this solitude. We are on Shuswap Lake in Western Canada, surrounded by the forests in the heart of British Columbia.
Suddenly, it seems as if our flight halfway around the world and our arrival at the Sicamous charter base only a few days ago are memories of a distant past. And yet, our very first impressions of Canada could not have been more vivid...
Emitting a thunderous, vibrating drone, the four rusty-red Canadian Pacific diesel locomotives are lumbering across the ancient steel span bridging the Sicamous Narrows. We count twenty, thirty rail cars, and then quit at forty. But the train keeps coming—everything is a little bigger, here in North America, and that includes houseboats.
And about those, there's a lot of expert knowledge in Sicamous: At the Twin Anchors charter base, we are greeted with an exuberant, "Welcome to Canada's houseboat capital!" That claim appears to be justified because the floating vacation homes are not only crowding each other at the floating docks but are also berthed side-by-side at the shoreline of the Narrows.
But before we board, we need to go shopping, heeding the warning that, around the lake, provisions and supplies are pretty scarce commodities. We descend on Askew Foods in the downtown area, and soon our shopping cart is piled high with spaghetti, corn flakes and marshmallows.
Back at the bustling marina, Brian of the Twin Anchors crew is already expecting us. Stepping across the front deck, we set foot on the "Toy Yot" for the first time, our eyes wide with surprise. If it weren't for the helm, this floating accommodation would have the feel of a 60-foot deluxe bungalow. From the fireplace in the lounge to the Jacuzzi with wet bar on the pool deck, to the double-wide refrigerator with ice maker—not a single amenity is missing, and it's all there, in XXL size...
Small wonder that the electrical panel, too, is super-sized, and that calls for some detailed explanations. With the abundance of electric appliances on board, it takes some time to remember which devices can be run on battery, and at what time. But Brian is an old hand at this, and he remains patient, even when we repeat some of our questions two or three times.
As our orientation winds down, dusk descends on the lake. Again, we take a leisurely stroll through the little town with its low wooden houses, watch the highway trucks roaring along the Trans-Canada Highway on their way to Calgary, and finally settle down for a bison burger on the deck of Bannocks Cafe. Little flags adorned with the "Pink-and-Grey", the Maple Leaf, are fluttering in the evening breeze, and a single houseboat is passing under the bridge on its way out onto the lake. Tomorrow will be our turn!
The following morning, its “Anchors aweigh!” We breathe a sigh of relief after passing under the Sicamous bridge and leaving the sandbanks behind us at starboard. With a little wind and at low speed, steering our "floating mobile home" can be a bit of a challenge, which may have something to do with the 3-litre Mercury inboard at the stern. But with a little practice, we should be able to manage—after all, this is a charter boat, for which an operator's license is not required.
It is quite hot and dry, considering that this is the beginning of September. Blue mist clings to the treed mountain ridges, the sky is featureless, dull and without colour. Word is that forest fires—in Washington state to the south—are to blame. And indeed: The scent of charred wood, however faint, is in the air.
Maintaining a leisurely pace, we are heading northeast, past Hungry Cove and the beacon at Marble Point. Here and there, we see splashes of white that contrast with the dark-green shoreline: Other houseboats settled at anchorage for the night, or they might still be looking, as we are.
Beyond the huge, tinted picture windows, we watch the spectacular natural scenery unfold like an Imax motion picture, and the soft upholstery of the sofa at the helm doubles as our VIP box.
Some three hours later, we are approaching the Cinnemousin Narrows. During the main season, the long sandy beach on the western shore of this bottleneck is a popular venue for entire fleets of houseboats teeming with college students. And then, as a natural consequence, bikinis on the top deck, mountains of beer cans, and hammering bass notes that carry on until sunrise are major ingredients of the beach party.
However, because we do want to be able catch a few winks, we leave the Narrows behind us at port. A few kilometres further on, we use our binoculars to scout the southern lakeshore for a suitable landing. In Roberts Bay we find our spot: A steep pebble beach, with the nearest boat moored at a suitable distance in the next bay.
The bow rises up, a short jerk, and we have "landed".
With the broad bow of our craft pointed squarely at the shore, we reduce the engine RPM. And although we are chugging along at a snail's pace, we seem to be closing in quite rapidly. A slight course correction to clear a boulder. Another ten metres, five, two, and then there's that grinding and scraping under our aluminium pontoons: The bow rises up, a short jerk, and we have "landed".

We extend the boarding plank and disembark with the "anchor gear": Using a massive sledge hammer, we drive a couple of two-foot beaching stakes into the beach pebbles—these will be the "bollards" for fastening our stern lines. The lake echoes with the ringing sound of hammer blows. When the job is done, the silence is unexpectedly sudden.
Thanks to the position of our boat on the beach, the forest starts an arm's length away. We enter the canopy of trees and follow the sound of rushing water on a well-worn trail until we reach a creek. Ferns, lichens and mossy branches produce green hues in a hundred sparkling facets. And all of it illuminated—courtesy of the evening sun—by shafts of slanted sunlight in the undergrowth.
Back on board, we start the generator to make sure we don't run out of juice during the night. Then it's time to toast our cruising vacation with Glacier beer (because it's nicely chilled, the Glacier beer truly lives up to its name). As the last thing on our to-do list, we close off the passage to the boarding plank—because of the black bears. "Although they're not dangerous," Brian had said, "they can create quite a bit of mischief. Therefore, never put your table scraps outside!" Because that, as he explained, would be akin to an invitation to a self-serve buffet.
The morning air is nippy and clear. The lines have been hauled in, and we're ready to get going. The engine is started, shifted into reverse, then throttled up. Nothing. More throttle. Still nothing. The wheel is turned hard starboard, then back to port, for minutes on end. We look at the UHF radio. There are only three channels: Ship-to-Ship, Weather, and Ship-to-Base—it's little comfort to know that there's a service boat on standby at the marina, exactly for cases like this.
We give it one last try. The stern swings back and forth, pendulum-like, and suddenly we're moving astern—haltingly at first, then the pace picks up, and "Toy Yot" is free again. There are not one but two "sea stores", anchored smack-dab in the southern access to the Cinnemousin Narrows. These floating markets carry everything you may run out of on the lake—from premium gasoline to fresh eggs for breakfast.
North of the narrows, the lake splits up: While Shuswap Lake continues to the northwest (where there aren't many suitable landings), the equally long Seymour Arm branches off to the northeast. Our destination, the Albas Falls, lies at its very end.
We are now taking turns at the helm on the flybridge. And, standing at the railing on the pool deck, the sensation of being on a cruise liner is very real. The water gurgling under our pontoons is comfortably warm and very clear. We follow the lead of the other houseboats around us and keep taking short swimming breaks. To the accompaniment of the clink of ice cubes in our glasses, there's a touch of nostalgia as the Eagles' Hotel California plays on the audio system: "Such a lovely place, such a lovely place..."
Two days later, "Toy Yot" gently pushes into the fine sand on the beach of Bughouse Bay at the end of the lake. As bays go, it's a friendly place, with near-level shores and faintly reminiscent of Switzerland because of the mountain ranges rising in the east—the first tentative foothills of the legendary Rocky Mountains. But we're not here for the alpine panorama.
Instead, we feel a strong attraction to Daniel's Store, which is marked on the map—our provisions, both liquid and solid, are in dire need of replenishment.
That's where we meet Josef, who is running the small, floating store. He takes one look at our friend Morten's professional SLR with its impressive wide-angle lens, "Hey, why don't you take my picture," he suggests, laughing.
We learn that he came to Canada from the Czech Republic years ago. The pleasant accent is still very much in evidence. He has also lived in Germany, as it turns out. "But right here, this is where I found my spot," he says and pushes back his straw hat.
His buddy Billy, a dyed-in-the-wool Canadian, nods in agreement and, as if backing Joseph's assertion, reaches out with both hands. "I've got my coffee here, and my biscuit here. What else do I need? I'm happy!" We have no trouble believing him.
At Bughouse Bay, we are served the "world's best beer". When it's time to say good-bye, Joseph tops the bar with a very special treasure: From his private stash, he offers a bottle of genuine Pilsener Urquell to each one of us. "Best beer in the world," he says as he wipes the dusty label. "From the old country..."
We finally arrive at Albas Falls. Our nearest neighbour is anchored far away at the other end of the crescent-shaped bay, where the creek runs into the lake across a bed of smooth river pebbles. The sun is still high, the lake a surface of glass; nimble Daycruisers are towing bananas and wakeboards, restless Seadoos are carving up the water in nervous patterns of multiple switchbacks.
Clambering across greyed tree trunks hollowed by rot, we make our way along the banks of Albas Creek until we come across a trail leading to the waterfalls. The scent of moss is in the air. The trail becomes more rocky and difficult to negotiate. Finally, the falls are upon us, roaring cascades of water that shoot through chimneys and across cliffs on their plunge into unseen depths. Close to a rock we discover deep animal footprints. Was this a bear, maybe?
It's time to head home. Meaning not only this hike we're on, but our entire vacation. In a scant two days, we'll be back in Sicamous, then leave Shuswap Lake. But we aren't quite there yet. Right now, we need to gather some driftwood for the campfire. And then, let's see—maybe a Sundowner would hit the spot. Nice to kick back...
The conclusion of our journey is one of profound contrasts: The glittering residential and office high-rises soar into a cobalt blue sky. Yachts are coming in and going out, and a float plane swoops down for a landing in Coal Harbour. Piers and parks are full of people, yet the atmosphere in Vancouver's downtown is one of absolute ease, and truly laid back, as the saying goes.
To put things in perspective, this glittering metropolis with its unique North Pacific cultural mix is really only a stopover on our long way home. There is enough time however, for a first and fascinating impression, and so we experience our two short days in Vancouver not so much as the absolute opposite to the trip we just finished. Instead, they furnished the balance that made the trip a perfect experience.
We had set course for the wilderness, and now we're back.

Da die Umsetzung von Steuerungs- oder Regelungsfunktionen zunehmend durch Software erfolgt, haben die Analyse- und Entwurfsverfahren der Steuerungs- und Regelungstechnik, die von Werkzeugen beispielsweise mit numerischen Simulationsverfahren unterstützt werden, großen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung vieler Software-Funktionen.
In diesem Abschnitt soll nicht auf die zahlreichen Analyse- und Entwurfsmethoden eingegan-gen werden. Dazu wird auf die Literatur, beispielsweise [34, 35], verwiesen. Dieser Abschnitt konzentriert sich auf Kriterien, die bei der Analyse und beim Entwurf von steuerungs- und regelungstechnischen Fahrzeugfunktionen frühzeitig beachtet werden müssen, falls die Funk-tionen durch elektronische Systeme und Software realisiert werden sollen.

A closer look at the nature of many vehicle functions reveals that they represent open-loop or closed-loop control functions. Earlier in this book it was stated in Section 4.4.2 that, for the purpose of this discussion, no differentiation will be made between open-loop and closed-loop control systems, and that the text will therefore use the term control system as standing for both. Because the implementation of all types of control functions is increasingly handled by soft-ware, the analysis and design methods indigenous to control technology, which may be sup-ported by tools using numerical simulation methods, exert a significant influence on the devel-opment of many software functions.
This section does not intend to get into the details of the numerous analysis and design meth-ods. For a detailed discussion of these, reference is made to the relevant specialized literature, i.e., [34, 35]. Instead, the focus of this section highlights those criteria that must be considered early on in the analysis and design of control functions onboard vehicles, provided the said functions are intended for implementation on the basis of software and electronic systems.
The quest for solving control tasks is independent of the construction-related aspects of the respective control section (control plant). Instead, the static and dynamic behavior of the plant is of primary importance. For this reason, the first step of controller-specific analysis methods consists of examining the plant. Once the system boundaries for the plant have been estab-lished, the input and output parameters (I/O parameters), as well as the components of the plant, are defined. Identification methods are then used to establish physical model equations depicting the static and dynamic interrelations between the components. The resulting model view of the plant becomes the foundation for any and all subsequent design procedures.
In the course of this procedure, all of the components of an electronic system that contribute to the solution of a given control function—such as setpoint generators, sensors, actuators, and electronic control units—are initially assigned to the control system to be designed. During the early phase, this practice simplifies the system view of the components, interfaces, and interre-lations shown in Figure 5-2. The specific technical structure of the control system being designed is defined only in the course of designing the technical system architecture.

Eine Connectivity-View erlaubt es, das zu verwaltende Netz logisch aufzuteilen. Zwei funktionale Objekte können in eine Connectivity-View eingefügt werden: weitere Connectivity-Views und Layers. Durch den Einsatz von verschiedenen Connectivity-Views kann ein Netz z.B. „horizontal“ aufgeteilt werden. Layer sind Sichten, bezogen auf eine Signalhierarchie, und stellen eine „vertikale“ Aufteilung einer Connectivity-View dar. Für die Verwaltung und Übersichtlichkeit können auch Notizbuch-Objekte und grafische Elemente in eine Connectivity-View eingefügt werden.
Berechtigung
Jeder Benutzer mit den notwendigen Rechten auf die der View zugeordnete(n) Bedienklasse(n) kann das Fenster öffnen bzw. bearbeiten. Das Bearbeiten ist abhängig vom Änderungsmodus des Fensters.

Purpose of window
A Connectivity View facilitates logical network structuring. Two types of functional objects—additional Connectivity Views and layers—can be inserted into a given Connectivity View. For example, a network can be horizontally divided by means of different Connectivity Views. Layers are hierarchy-specific Views, and comprise a vertical segmentation of a Connectivity View. For administrative purposes or to maintain structural clarity, Notepad objects and graphical elements can be inserted into a Connectivity View.
Required OpRights
Any user possessing the necessary OpRights for one or more OpClasses assigned to the View will be able to open the window and/or change its contents. To enable editing in the window, the window must first be switched to Editing Mode.
Open Window
The window can be opened by double-clicking the Connectivity View icon. A second option would be using the «Show Element» command on the pop-up menu.
Connectivity view
Descriptions of main menu and editor icon bar functions appear in volume System Architecture & Operating Functions. Within the window, source objects can be used to instantiate new Connectivity Views.
The «Admin / Trail Browser» command sequence is described later in this chapter (refer to page 26). To emphasize the hierarchical nature of signal levels, the user can structure a vertical arrangement of the layers in the Connectivity View. As an option, graphical lines and labeling may be added to enhance the interrelationships existing between different layers.
Setting up layers in Connectivity View
As a prerequisite to inserting a layer into a Connectivity View, the "Connectivity View" window must be open and switched to Editing Mode. Clicking the Source Objects symbol opens the "Source Objects" window. Selecting the "Transmission Layer" symbol causes all supported layers to be displayed. Layers are provided for PDH and SDH multiplex structures. Layers are instantiated in the Connectivity View via Drag & Drop transfer. At least one layer must be inserted for each of the hierarchical signal levels to be managed.
The network used as an example features connections at both the STM-1 and 2 Mbit/s layer. For this reason, the referred layers were inserted into the Connectivity View. A 2 Mbit/s connection through an SDH network also requires connections in the VC4 and VC12 layers. For this reason, these layers were set up in the example as well.
