Ausgangstext - Englisch It’s one of the most infamous murders of the last century.
The killing of Grigoriy Rasputin, in St. Petersburg, in 1916.
Known as a debauched sex-mad monk, Rasputin believed sinning brought him closer to God.
His mystical healing powers brought him to the very heart of the Russian monarchy.
Rasputin was supposedly poisoned, shot and drowned, in a plot led by a jealous Russian prince.
Now, almost 90 years on, Timewatch reopens the case to ask: who really killed Rasputin?
Rasputin was born in a remote siberian village in 1869, into a family of illiterate peasant farmers.
He was a wild youth who was regularly drunk and often accused of theft.
But his life took an unexpected turn when he spent several months in a monastery.
It was the beginning of his life as a self-styled holy man.
Among his powers, he claimed to be able to heal the sick.
After more than a decade of preaching, his reputation had spread to the capital, St. Petersburg.
He finally made his entrance in 1903.
The enigmatic monk became a celebrity around St. Petersburg.
He was a newsworthy character and was a favourite subject for the local press.
He began mixing in the highest circles of St. Petersburg’s society.
Eventually, it was this that was to secure his access to the heart of the Russian royal family.
After his introduction to the ruling son Nicholas and his wife, the tzarina, Rasputin became a regular visitor to the palace.
Alexei, their only son and heir to the throne, suffered from hemophilia, regular bleeding fits that could have killed him at any time.
In her despair, the tzarina became dependent on Rasputin.
She had total belief in his alleged powers.
Whenever the attacks occurred, Rasputin would be instantly summoned to the child’s side.
On several occasions, it appeared he saved the young boy’s life.

Começou a circular nas mais altas esferas da sociedade de S. Petersburgo.
Foi isto que acabou por lhe permitir o acesso ao seio da família real russa.
Após ser apresentado ao príncipe regente Nicolau e à sua mulher, a czarina, Rasputin tornou-se numa visita regular do palácio.
Alexandre, o seu único filho e herdeiro do trono, sofria de hemofilia, de surtos hemorrágicos regulares que podiam matá-lo a qualquer altura.
Com o desespero, a czarina tornou-se dependente de Rasputin.
Acreditava piamente nos seus alegados poderes.
Sempre que ocorriam os ataques, Rasputin era imediatamente chamado para junto do menino.
Em várias ocasiões, pareceu salvar a vida do rapazinho.

Croire que tout commence ici est déjà une illusion.
Le large est déjà là, au rebord, tout en haut de la colline.
C’est comme une aspiration.
La ville est cette chose en équilibre à la fenêtre entre la fin d’un continent et mille autres.
C’est ainsi qu’à Lisbonne un vol d’hirondelles, sifflet noir, m’a réveillé de cette torpeur.
J’ai suivi leur course - elles allaient vers ce pont immense, là-bas.
Tout à l’est, à la hauteur de vos yeux, l´Église Convento de Graça, forte, au dôme frêle comme un nid d’où vous la voyez.
Elle est perchée au sommet d’une colline aux flancs un peu pelés.
Le regard glisse ensuite dans un morceau de mer qui n’est pas la mer, qui est le Rio Tejo, le Tage.
La terre reprend aussitôt et vous déploie une île verte comme suspendue au-dessus de l’eau, un très large promontoire surmonté de murailles crénelées et de ruines, un château maure au nom de saint chrétien, São Jorge…
Puis, c’est le Tage à nouveau et la rive sud en arrière.
Le fleuve est rayé d’écume, dans le sillage de barges qui semblent grises et de ferries, orange probablement.
Une statue géante, de l’autre côté, celle d’un Christ les bras étendus imitant son double de Rio du Brésil, domine l’ensemble et fait face à la ville, vous fait face.
Le Tage certainement emmène votre regard qui glisse au long de l’eau vers l’ouest, du côté de ce pont immense dont je parlais et qui relie les deux rives.
Et votre regard revient vers le point où vous êtes, en trouvant un mystérieux appui contre la coupole blanche de la basilique da Estrela.
Votre regard revient vers vous, oui, par une infinité de tâches ocre, bistre, blanches: toits de tuiles, bâtiments de toutes tailles posés anarchiquement, savamment, debout, couchés, au hasard.
Lisbonne prête à confusion comme le monde lorsque nous parvenons à le regarder.
Lorsque je dis “prête à confusion”, Lisbonne me paraît, et de loin, avoir le meilleur taux d’efficacité catalytique…
Mais, du coup, ce mélange est une chance: il pourrait te pousser à ne pas mentir.
Ou à mentir juste…
On est là aux frontières de l’Europe et de l’Océan.

Crer que tudo começa aqui é, já em si, uma ilusão.
O mar fica já ali, no parapeito, mesmo no cimo da colina.
É como uma aspiração.
A cidade é aquela coisa em equilíbrio, à janela, entre o fim de um continente e mil outros.
Foi assim que, em Lisboa, um voo de andorinhas, silvo negro, me despertou deste torpor.
Segui o seu curso - dirigiam-se para aquela ponte imensa, lá ao fundo.
A leste, à altura dos nossos olhos, a Igreja do Convento da Graça, imponente, com a sua cúpula frágil como um ninho, vista daqui.
Está empoleirada no alto de uma colina com encostas um pouco despidas.
O olhar desliza em seguida para um pedaço de mar que não é o mar, que é um rio, o rio Tejo.
A terra surge novamente e revela-nos uma ilha verdejante, como que suspensa à tona da água, um imenso promontório coroado de muralhas ameadas e de ruínas, um castelo mouro com o nome de um santo cristão, São Jorge...
Depois, é de novo o Tejo e a margem sul ao fundo.
O rio está raiado de espuma, na esteira de batéis aparentemente cinzentos e de “ferries” provavelmente cor de laranja.
Uma estátua gigante, na outra margem, a de um Cristo de braços abertos, imitando a sua gémea do Rio, no Brasil, domina o conjunto de frente para a cidade, de frente para nós.
O Tejo atrai-nos o olhar, que desliza ao longo da água para oeste, para junto daquela ponte imensa de que eu falava e que liga as duas margens.
E o nosso olhar regressa ao ponto onde nos encontramos, descobrindo um misterioso apoio na cúpula branca da Basílica da Estrela.
O nosso olhar regressa para junto de nós, sim, por uma infinidade de manchas ocres, bistres, brancas: telhados de telhas, edifícios de todos os tamanhos colocados anarquicamente, sabiamente, de pé, deitados, ao acaso.
Lisboa presta-se a confusões, tal como o mundo, quando nos pomos a observá-lo.
E quando digo “presta-se a confusões”, Lisboa parece-me, de longe, possuir a maior taxa de eficácia catalítica...
Mas, por isso mesmo, esta miscelânea é uma oportunidade: pode levar-nos a não mentir.
Ou precisamente a mentir...

I am an English and French into European Portuguese freelance translator and subtitler, born and based in Lisbon (Portugal), and passionate about my city, my language, and my work.
At the beginning of my career, in 1988, I have worked mainly with renowned publishing houses, translating and editing literature (fiction and nonfiction) and comics. In 1990, I was selected by the European Commission as an Assistant Translator. Since 2012, I have been almost exclusively dedicated to the localization of websites, the translation of corporate documents, and especially the subtitling of cinema, TV shows and series, documentaries, corporate videos, and cartoons.
All these years allowed me to work in a wide variety of fields, ranging from science to arts, from politics to sports, from psychology to astrology, from history to environment, from education to cooking, decoration, tourism, and fashion.
