Dutch term

opvallend licht

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Physics measurement technology
This appears in a description of a precision measurement instrument:

De witlichtsensoren kunnen zowel afstand meten als laagdikte voor transparante materialen. De camera’s kunnen worden gecombineerd met verschillende lenstypen en verschillende verlichtingsbronnen. Hiermee kunnen verschillende beelden (doorlicht, opvallend licht) worden gemaakt en zo verschillende soorten metingen worden uitgevoerd.

Discussion

Michael Beijer Apr 5, 2017:
@Ruth: Aha, interesting. In that case, I'd agree that "incident light" would probably be better.
Ruth Tanner (asker) Apr 5, 2017:
Need paragraph breaks! Just reposting my note here so the links and information are easier to follow.

Thanks for your thorough response, Michael!

I'd choose "incident light" over "reflected light", as my investigations indicated that they are two different things. A couple of examples:

http://www.sekonic.com/l-478/incident-vs-reflected.html
Incident light measures the light falling on your subject. ... Reflected light measures the light reflecting off your subject.

Met een losse lichtmeter zijn er vrijwel altijd twee mogelijkheden om het licht te meten: gereflecteerd licht maar ook opvallend-licht.

Oxforddictionaries.com:

incident:

2. (Especially of light or other radiation) falling on or striking something

usage examples:

– when an ion beam is incident on a surface
– There is a resonant interaction of the incident light with the surface plasmons on both surfaces of the metal film.
– The intensity of all monochromatic incident light was kept close using neutral density filters.
– Further, nitrogen-based defensive compounds tend to increase under both high nutrient availability and reduced incident radiation.
– This orientation minimizes the polymer's exposure to incident light and hence lowers observed fluorescence.

(I'd therefore like to add "reflected light" to my answer as a synonym.)

agree Kitty Brussaard : Indeed, the evidence is overwhelming :-)

thanks! :-)
agree Lianne van de Ven : I think I would prefer reflected light. Had to look up incident light - which is not a bad thing in itself: https://www.scienceabc.com/pure-sciences/how-can-transparent...

Yeah, I'd say they should both go in the glossary.
