I'm translating a beginners' bridge course and have found a couple of gaps in my English bridge vocabulary. I'm particularly interested in British usage, as there are sometimes GB-US differences, I believe.
'Werkkleur', the suit you have to attack first to establish extra tricks. This seems to be how the bridge books describe it, but I find it amazing that there isn't a more concise term.
Examples and best efforts so far:
Je speelt 3SA. De tegenpartij komt uit met ♣B.
- je hebt 7 zekere slagen
- je komt twee slagen te kort, die moet je ergens vandaan halen
- in ruiten kun je slagen ontwikkelen, dat is je werkkleur
(....- you can create winning tricks in diamonds so that’s the suit you attack first)
In bovenstaand voorbeeld speelde je een lange kleur vrij door de hoge kaarten (aas en heer) van de tegenpartij er uit te jagen. Die lange kleur heet de werkkleur.
(In the example shown above, you established your long suit by driving out the opponents' high cards (ace and king). This is called attacking your long suit.)

you normally develop a long suit to establish/set up tricks (standard play in No Trump and after you clear up the trump situation in suit contracts) ... I would go with "long suit"

Play techniques
Terence Reese, a prolific author of bridge books, points out that there are only four ways of taking a trick by force, and two of these are very easy:
*playing a high card that no one else can beat
*trumping an opponent's high card
*establishing long cards (the last cards in a suit will take tricks if the opponents don't have the suit and are unable to trump)
*playing for the opponents' high cards to be in a particular position (if their ace is in front of your king, your king may take a trick)

the "working" idea is fine in the sense of a "working void" (i.e. when you have no cards in partner's long suit)

the "suit you attack first etc." option is certainly acceptable and covers more bases than "long suit" but needs clarifying in each specific case ... the bottom line is that I can't come up with anything better than your research so far but will keep working on it ...
