French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng HVAC/ heat pumps
Hi all,

The context is a Press Pack for a boiler company and specifically "Pompes à chaleur". The 3 categories of the latter are:

- Aérothermie sur vecteur eau
- Aérothermie sur vecteur air (multi-split réversible)
- Géothermie (excepté sol-sol)

The first two are covered in another Proz post but I'm not sure about the last one.
"Geothermal heat pumps (except ground-ground)"? Not convinced.

I'd appreciate any help and hope I've provided enough context.

I suspect that what they are referring to are heat pump systems which extract heat from the ground (ground source) and thence to underfloor heating: these operate at lower temperatures than systems which heat the air. Ground source I think they mean that they don't use ground-source geothermal heat pumps, as you can also have water-source geothermal pumps

Usually they talk about "sol-sous sol". I thind that the correct technical expression is "ground source closed-loop"

Geothermal heat pumps (except direct expansion)

I just translated a document on geothermal heat pumps and had to look it up myself. It corresponds to direct expansion or direct exchange heat pumps (both abbreviated as DX, more g-hits for the first but both are used). In French they also talk about "détente directe" http://www.therminove.com/geothermie-limoges and http://www.encyclo-ecolo.com/Géothermie#Sol-sol. It's an older method that some installers no longer use.
