Translation - English Post-mastectomy lymphoedema of the arm has been described as “the most unpleasant and most common non-lethal complication and the only one resulting in functional loss in the affected arm”.
This is caused by the inevitable damage to the lymphatics due to removal of the axillary lymph nodes. This type of oedema can cause sensations of tightness and heaviness, loss of muscle strength, blockage of joint movement and sometimes pain throughout the arm and back.
Breast cancer and its side-effects following surgery affect a woman not only physically, but also emotionally, behaviourally, spiritually and socially, as well as having an impact on her family, from the initial diagnosis through to the treatment and rehabilitation stage.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women worldwide, making it a public health issue; the mortality rate from breast cancer in Mexico has maintained an upward trend, with breast cancer being the primary cause of death in Mexico from malignant tumours and affecting mainly women over the age of 25.
Arm lymphoedema occurs in around 26% of cases, following treatment for breast cancer.
Translation - English Retinoblastoma is a rare type of tumour which accounts for only 3% of cancers in children. It is, however, the most common intraocular cancer in this group.
The variation in the number of cases worldwide can be attributed to genetic predisposition, as well as to environmental factors. Around 3,000 children in the world die from retinoblastoma each year, with the highest incidence being in Asia and Africa.
There are two distinct types of tumour, depending on the level of genetic involvement, each having different clinical presentations, relating principally to laterality and disease development, although the histology is similar in both.
Patients are usually diagnosed at pre-school age, with 70% of unilateral cases being non-hereditary. Retinoblastoma is potentially curable and prognosis has improved significantly in recent decades.
Where metastatic tumours occur, they are mainly associated with germinal or hereditary cases of the disease. Radiotherapy increases the possibility of secondary tumours, therefore it tends to be avoided in favour of chemotherapy.
External-beam radiotherapy is considered fundamental in the treatment of retinoblastoma: it is used conservatively in the early stages of the disease, where there is still a good level of vision, and more aggressively in advanced cases.
Translation - English The link between substance use and domestic violence.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently revealed that Chile is one of the countries with the highest incidence of mood disorders in the region. More than a million Chileans suffer from anxiety and 800,000 from depression.
The prevalence of depressive symptoms is almost triple in women and, in general, mental health disorders tend to occur more in this sector of the population.
Within the sphere of mental health disorders, substance misuse in the female population has become more evident in recent years.
This is a complex and multicausal phenomenon and tends to be interlinked with other problems of a psychosocial nature.
Of the 55 women treated in 2015 at the Novadia Outpatient Treatment Centre, some 82% had a history of domestic violence or sexual abuse.
The aim of this article is to highlight the close relationship between substance use disorders (SUD) and violence against women (VAW), as well as the ways in which both these phenomena are linked, from a gender point of view.
Using a gender-based approach, it is possible to see the effects of gender socialization and allows us to identify the specific problems affecting the women who attend our centres and the effects of having been socialized as such, including the impact on their paths of consumption (motivating factors, relapse processes, patterns of consumption, etc.).
