NB: Gemini bot output, so no guarantee this works.
To force Windows 10 to open menus and submenus on the right side of the screen or your cursor, you can adjust the "Handedness" setting in the Tablet PC Settings or modify the Windows Registry. This adjusts the alignment so menus expand outward to the right.

Method 1: Change Handedness (Easiest)
This built-in menu allows you to adjust the "handedness" preference.

1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
2. Type or paste the following command and press Enter:explorer shell:::{80F3F1D5-FECA-45F3-BC32-752C152E456E}
3. Go to the Other tab.
4. Under the "Handedness" section, select Left-handed or Right-handed.
5. Click OK, and then sign out and sign back into Windows for the change to take effect.

Method 2: Modify the Registry (Advanced)
If Method 1 doesn't work, you can update the menu alignment directly in the registry.

1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and hit Enter.
2. Navigate to the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
3. Look for a string value named MenuDropAlignment on the right side. (If it doesn't exist, right-click the empty space, select New > String Value, and name it MenuDropAlignment)
4. Double-click MenuDropAlignment and change the value data: 0: Menus open to the right.1: Menus open to the left.
5. Click OK, then restart your computer.

[Bearbeitet am 2026-06-22 17:51 GMT]

Forum: General technical issues
Topic: Need to change the menu side the submenu opens on -- Windows 10
Poster: kd42

Good day,
My workhorse Win10 computer is very old, I recently downloaded and applied the latest OS update (I needed is for some valid reason which I now forget).
After the update the submenus in some programs started opening on the left side, which is a bit strange, because the main menu has this item and the arrow-like pointer on the right, but when I click the menu item, the submenu opens on the left. I don't like it, it annoys me.
AI bots confirm this change in the submenu behaviour, and say there's no solution.
I therefore as for human help: maybe someone here knows the fix for this?
Thank you.
I assume you mean they send a push notification on your phone. I would not want to subscribe to such a service, mostly because the notification is likely to arrive at a time when I'm not at my computer, and therefore I would forget about it within a few seconds of receiving it. An email notification is more useful, as I can see which emails are unread whenever I go back to my mailbox. In the case of email notifications, it doesn't bother me that the notification comes in the middle of the night.

Forum: General technical issues
Topic: Clever approach by some developers
Poster: kd42

I have clients who use XTRF (a job management platform) and Trados Cloud. Nothing really complex, therefore they can afford hiring very wise staff.

I made this conclusion because these two systems can send out a warning to a freelancer, about the fact that "half of the time for the task has passed" or "the requested date for 1 task is approaching" at 03:15 am of a Sunday night.

Setting your weekly schedule does not help, setting your time zone does not help, they simply measure 50% of time before the deadline and fire their clever notification, day or night, weekend or not.

Obviously, their programmers cannot program this system otherwise, maybe they lack the skills, or probably their managers and/or owners don't give a banana about it.

My phone, however, does not play incoming email tunes before the morning alarm rings, therefore, a duct tape solution is to set the alarm to 11 am.

The deep crisis in the industry is made of such numerous small things, the power of bright minds in large groups must never be underestimated.

All I want is for the replacement *not* to occur if String1 is isolated, but only when it's word-ending.

Forum: General technical issues
Topic: Moving to Windows 11 - trouble with BaccS
Poster: Matthijs Frankena

I'm moving to a Windows 11 PC and experiencing trouble with BaccS. This piece of management software for translators was written by Eugene Kuchinsky some 8 years ago and made available to Proz Plus members. I've been using it for quite a while now and really would like to take it with me to the new PC. Its database contains all my data since I started using it and I don't want the hassle now to find a new system and having to move all my data from the past years and getting used to something new.

Some time after I started working with it, Eugene sold BaccS to SDL (now RWS) and it was renamed Trados Business Manager. The development of BaccS was stopped and Trados Business Manager has been discontinued in the meantime.

Regarding my issue: I still have an installer for BaccS that installs version [IP removed] , but the version I run on my old PC is [IP removed] . I don't have an installer for the new version. As the database seems to have been changed between these two versions, I can't import a database from the old PC in the BaccS environment on the new PC. I've tried installing the older version on the new PC and then copying the program folder of BaccS [IP removed] over that, but as you might expect, that doesn't lead to anything (BaccS then simply won't start).

Does anyone have an installer for BaccS version [IP removed] that they can share with me? Alternatively, has anyone experienced this same problem and managed to solve it? I would really appreciate it if I can continue to work with this software until I have time to look for something else to replace it.

From what I recall, there should be a button called "Clear QA issues":

Try using that.

Alternatively, try running both QA options as explained here:

Let me know if either of these fixes the issue.

The WordPress TM forming the basis of the translated versions of the site doesn't respond one bit when trying to confirm the English segments. This concerns human translation.

Any idea what to do about it? I apologize for not being able to share a screenshot. However, I am happy to describe the issue and specifics of the target segments in more detail if you inquire about it in this thread.

Best,

[Edited at 2025-01-08 09:27 GMT]
Around 2018, when I was having a slight but worrying twinge in the tendons in my right hand I bought a bunch of gadgets including:

* A fancy Logitech trackball mouse with programmable buttons. Used it on and off for a while but when I changed my computer it didn't work and no new drivers were available.

* A programmable 46-key mini keyboard. I thought I would use it for macros and shortcuts. Actually quite useful if you can be bothered but it turns out that I can't and it's in The Box.

* Wacom Bamboo touchpad with four programmable keys. I didn't buy this, my partner had bought it and discarded it. I use it quite a lot, but only the programmable buttons, not the touchpad part (something like this - ).

* There might have been some more variations on mice as well, but I'm back to a standard, cheap, hand-wrecking version (and my hand is now fine)

I have a single button programmed for that keystroke on a Bamboo tablet so I can sit back in my chair and just read and press the button, which is useful sometimes, and a foot pedal could be used in the same way.

If you are using certain keystrokes a lot the repetition of a single movement can be problematic, so using a foot pedal some of the time could spread the load.
I have one, but I don't use it at the moment.

Most of the discussion I have seen has centered on the use of foot pedals to mitigate the burden on the hands/wrists/arms. For example, some people use them as a replacement for hitting the Control or Shift key. I think with transcription it makes sense because there is that conceptual back (left pedal) and forward (right pedal) motion that may be repeated many times a minute. But for straightforward translation, which is basically text editing, there doesn't seem to be such a clear use case. I guess you could map to start of line/end of line...

Do you have problems with RSI or carpal tunnel syndrome?

Regards,
Dan
No. It just seemed unfair that hands are doing all the (physical) work while legs are just idling under the table like a couple of freeloaders.
Moving to start/end of line is a good idea, or perhaps confirming or moving between segments. But as I thought more about it, I guess I will just skip buying them because I'm afraid they would remain unused.
