"Hierro" literally refers to a "hierro de marcar", a branding iron, and to the mark made by it. This expression is not found alone; there must be something after "hierro", and that something identifies the farm, ranch or breeding facility from which the animal comes. In practice, "hierro" means "breed". A "semental del hierro de Miura", for example, is of the Miura breed, Miura being a famous breeder of bulls and bullfighting horses.
