Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping / Train driver's manual
Spanish term or phrase: punto N de marcha
This is from a train driver's manual and refers to the functioning of the main controller in the driver's cab:

"Punto 0 de marcha: En este punto se mantiene cerrado el contacto A, el cual impide arrancar motores en el caso de que el controller esté en una posición distinta de “0”. No existe tracción.
Punto 1 de marcha: Al meter este punto cierran los contactos X, Y y Z, y abre el contacto A, el cual está abierto en todas las posiciones de controller que no sean posición 0.
etc"

I'm really not sure what we call this in English. Any train drivers or engineers out there today, please?!

N gear position
Explanation:
Gear position 0: you can´t start the engines, no motor will run, no advance
Gear position 1: allows motors to run and move the train
It´s like a car´s gear but with only two positions.

Thank you Louis and everyone. I really expected there to be a special railway term for this.

Notes to answerer
Asker: ah, ok, thanks. I assumed it would be called something else in a train.

Asker: @Sergio Kot Hi, I used "N" to represent the numbers which go from 0 to 7 (I just included a couple)

neutral  Sergio Kot: IMHO, not enough info to decide. It could also be "N" for "Neutral".

agree  philgoddard: I would say "gear position 0" and then first gear, second gear, and so on. The question is confusing.

Neutral gear position

Explanation:
If in position "0" the engines do not start and in position "1" they start and move the train, in position "N" must correspond to the similar position in cars, including those with automatic transmission. This should even allow the motors to run but there is no traction. The transmission is disconnected.
