Spanish term or phrase: imagen trinitaria
This is an article describing the connections between painter Remedios Varo and Hildegard de bingen's visions.

Clearly not in reference to the bougainvillea vine, though that is what I am finding online. Is it connected to the number three (trinity)?

agree  MollyRose: A literal translation is the safest. The work of Varo and de Bingen reflect magic, animism, and other traditions that are not lined up with the nature, spirit, and words of the (Christian) God of the Bible.

A Holy Trinity Refference (Father, Son and Holy spirit)

Explanation:
While it isn't its single and only use, "trinitaria" often makes reference to the christian Holy Trinity, but it's not the only one, any other kind of trinity CAN be used for the word "trinitaria" in religious contexts.

Either the author believes "una figura alada e ígnea, de cuya cabeza sale otra cabeza de cabello cano y cuyos brazos sostienen un cordero" is a sort of simbolism for the christian trinity, or is referencing another religion's or culture's trinity.

neutral  MollyRose: "Holy" is not in the source text, nor is "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The translator mustn't assume Christian terms, esp. since R. Vara "was influenced by her belief in magic and animistic faiths. "

-> I mostly guessed it could be a far-reaching christian reference due to both the use of "Trinitaria" and "sostienen un cordero". Which is why I clarified multiple times it was one of many possible interpretations.

image of the (holy) trinity

Explanation:
También se puede traducir de otra manera.. p.ej. "es una imagen trinitaria" = "which depicts the holy trinity" ,

NB: Some people might capitalise "Holy Trinity", as Robert has.

neutral  MollyRose: The word "holy" is not in the source and should not be added. See my notes to the other answerers.

neutral  AllegroTrans: I think you have made 2+2=5 here// I think it's no more than an oblique reference so it should stay that way in the translation

-> Do you really? Ithink the reference to the Christian notion of trinity is pretty evident, albeit oblique.
