Spanish term or phrase: contenciones devotas
This is a text describing the work of an early 20th-century Uruguayan painter:

Sin falsos miramientos ni dobleces morales, nuestro pintor retrata las pasiones humanas tan fielmente como lo hizo con sus contenciones devotas: desde el recogimiento espiritual hasta el desenfreno insensato, todo pasa por su pincel.

devout self-control

Explanation:
Self-discipline and self-control are associated to religious actions.

The self-discipline religious effect, however, only appears among intrinsic true believers and not among the socially conventional or extrinsically motivated religious.

phases (bouts) of devotional abstinence

Explanation:
Continence has medical echoes of incontinence, whilst the plural ought to be reflected somehow.

Bouts are not only of hard drinking. Phases possibly captures the slight ambiguity of the esteemed artist's own 'continence' and his depictions of such acts or, rather, omissions.

Example sentence(s):
  • [ ABSTINENCE PRINCIPLE: A 30-DAY DEVOTIONAL FOR TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS DEDICATED TO SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE ] Abstinence Principle: A 30-Day Devotional for Teens and Young Adults Dedicated to Spiritual Discipline

neutral  Charles Davis: I don't think Catholics in this context would be in any danger of confusing continence with bladder/bowel control. For that matter, abstinence usually means laying off the booze, and I doubt it's that.

agree  Robert Forstag: Aida: The meaning you mention is that which is most commonly used in today’s English. But the term is also used in the sense reflected in John’s translation, and this usage goes back several centuries.
